Today’s Great Debate: X Factor? Or X Flop?

Prior to its launch stateside, Simon Cowell admitted he had a lot at stake riding on The X Factor, and judging by the latest reports, his biggest concern that the show wouldn’t be a runaway success, could be accurate.

As, that is the only way to explain the massive shakeup that is currently occurring….

First, it was revealed that Steve Jones was out, but in shocking development, so too is Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger, according EW.com

The last men standing seem to be Simon himself and record producer L.A Reid.

According to people.com, a U.K. rep for Cowell could not comment on reports of the departures but said that “discussions and negotiations” are standard after a first season ends. “This happens after every show or series,” he added. “No decisions have been made that I am aware of.”

So, what do you make of all of this? Can the show really succeed without the one thing that made American Idol so addictive to watch: Paula and Simon’s chemistry?

Just in: Will wedding bells ring again for The Hoff?

UPDATE: 17 hours later, there’s still no official confirmation from the Hoff…he’s leaving us all hanging with his “What do you think she said?” line.

David Hasselhoff reported via Twitter that he had proposed to his  girlfriend Hayley Roberts on top of the Sydney Bridge (Oh, our home country!)

 It appears she said yes…

Smoking is a hard habit to break, but Katherine Heigl has found a way to kick it to the curb

She was  once famously an avid smoker, but not anymore. Katherine Heigl has traded in the unhealthy habit for the healthier alternative. She was spotted in New York City on January 24th smoking the electronic cigarette, SmokeStik as she left ABC’s studio after promoting her new movie One for the Money on The View.

We think we need to invest in one of these!

Music with Matt: More Grammy Previews & Predictions

Carrying on with my preview of this year’s Grammy awards, here’s a look at the nominees for Best Record and Song.
For those of you that are confused by the difference, Best Record goes to the artist and production team (producer, engineer, mixer) whereas Best Song goes to the songwriters themselves (often but not always the artists).
There you go…now you know!

As with Best Album, the frontrunner for me is Adele. ‘Rolling in the Deep’, drives along with an emotional intensity and a vocal performance that displays Adele’s power and soul in all its glory.

In sharp contrast, ‘Holocene’, from new indie-folksters Bon Iver, is a slow moving, atmospheric piece with abstract lyrics.
However, its stirring beauty, if a little somber, is still moving and it’s certainly one of the more interesting choices for a mainstream award nomination.

Bruno Mars’s, ‘Grenade’, is a hooky slice of R&B with an almost tribal drumbeat. I don’t think he’ll win here but is sure to scoop in other categories and for some years to come.

‘The Cave’, by Mumford and Sons is a rollicking chunk of acoustic folk, complete with haunting harmonies and reeling banjos.
Although seemingly old-fashioned, there is something very refreshing and invigorating about the Mumford’s

So, these four songs appear in both Best Record and Song categories.
The fifth nomination in Best Record goes to Katy Perry’s ‘Firework’, which seems somewhat out of place in the more austere company above. Whilst it is fine as an up-lifting slice of pop, if this is the best record of 2011 then the music industry is in more trouble than we thought!

In place of Perry in Best Song category is the collaboration between Kanye West, Fergie, Rihanna and a few hundred others.
An odd choice for song this, as it seems to have more going for it in the production rather than the melody department, with its interesting mash up of strings, brass and off- kilter beats.
It would certainly win longest intro award, and indeed the intro promises much, but unfortunately what follows descends back into heard it before rap/ R&B crossover.
SHOULD WIN: ROLLING IN THE DEEP.
WILL WIN: ROLLING IN THE DEEP.
Up next: Best Newcomer and other stuff!!

Here’s something rather quite lovely to end your day with…

There’s not too many women out there who don’t find David Beckham to be ridiculously hot.
So, amongst all the doom, gloom in world news , it’s nice to  just indulge in some guilty pleasures at times- this being one of them.
So, here you have it: The soccer player in all his glory for the David Beckham Bodywear campaign, released through H & M.
This clip is set to air during Superbowl, and it goes without saying that Victoria is one lucky, lucky woman.

The Nutrition Twins weigh in on the Brangelina bunch

The lovely ladies are back…
When it comes to celebrities and feeding their kids, they’re no different than the rest of us. They want what is best of their kids, but often do what is easiest or do what they know will make their kids happy. This doesn’t always mean what is best for their kids in terms of their health and nourishment. When it comes to fast food and dessert, kids certainly can enjoy it in limited quantities and still be healthy. So, Angelina taking the kids for In-N-Out and Baskin Robbins this week is really not a big deal if it’s balanced out with plenty of nutrient rich foods like whole grains, fruits and vegetables and lean proteins. We absolutely would not recommend Angelina doing this daily (or even every other day). When it comes to kids and nutrition, the key is to not allow the junk to crowd out the nutrient-rich foods. You want to do the opposite, allow the healthy foods to crowd out the junk foods.
We were surprised to hear that Brad has his kids hurry up and drink soda (we guess, he is human after all, we were convinced he was perfect! :) ) Giving kids soda to get them up and moving, is definitely something we’d advise against. A can of soda can have as much as 13 teaspoons of sugar in it and often is loaded with caffeine, which really shouldn’t be given to kids at all. Ideally, you want to make sure your kids are well rested enough and eat plenty of nourishing foods so that they always feel energetic and don’t have to rely on outside stimulants like caffeine and sugar.  Plus, if you make a habit out of giving your kid caffeine, he may become dependant on it, become irritable, tired, achy, have a hard time concentrating and experience other withdrawal symptoms if he cannot have caffeine.  Brad, wean your kids off the soda!
Follow the twins on twitter and catch them on Facebook.

Sapphire’s are a girls best friend

Everyone loves diamonds, but diamonds and sapphire are a hard- to-beat mix.
Penelope Ann Miller donned a combination of both at the Screen Actors Guild Award last night.
Blue Nile dressed The Artist star in its sapphire & diamond stud earrings, sapphire & diamond bracelet, premier eternity diamond bracelet, and sapphire & diamond ring.
We’re a fan of these…..

Talking Astrology with Archie: The Worst Shipping Disaster Ever

It’s nice to mix things up, take a momentary break from celebrities and look at history, and as you will find out from this piece from Archie Dunlop, today is very symbolic.

Archie writes…

What was the biggest maritime tragedy in history?  The sinking of the Titanic?

The Titanic was certainly a disaster, with 1,517 people killed.  However this was nothing compared to the Wilhelm Gustloff.

The Wilhelm Gustloff was a German passenger ship, that was built by the Nazis for holiday cruises.  It became a hospital ship, and then in 1945, as the Soviet army was crashing into the Eastern parts of Germany, it became an escape vessel.  At the time there was  terror amongst German citizens, and they were desperate to flee the advancing Russians.  The land routes were blocked, and the only option was to go by sea.

It was under these circumstances that the Wilhelm Gustloff set sail from Gdynia, en route to Kiel, across the Baltic Sea.  It was January 30 and it was very cold.

The rest of the story is tragically inevitable, though surprisingly few people have heard of the disaster.  This is in spite of the efforts of German novelist Günter Grass, who wove the Wilhelm Gustloff’s sinking into a haunting work of fiction, titled Crabwalk.

Such was the panic to board the Wilhelm Gustloff that no-one is quite sure how many people were on board.  However it was probably around ten thousand.  As the ship crossed the Baltic, it was spotted by a Soviet submarine, which fired four torpedoes at it, and three of them hit.

The ship went down quickly, but not so quickly that the officers in command weren’t able to save themselves.  Yet the vast majority of passengers died – that’s right, about 9,400 people were killed.  That’s over six times as many people who died on the Titanic.  Over three times as many people who died in the World Trade Center.

As Günter Grass pointed out, there are two weird coincidences relating to the sinking.

Firstly, January 30 1945, the day of the sinking, was the twelfth anniversary of Hitler coming to power – he became German Chancellor on January 30 1933.

Secondly, there’s a link with the person whom the Wilhelm Gustloff was named after.

The man Wilhelm Gustloff was a Swiss Nazi, who was actively anti-semitic.  In 1936 he was assassinated by a Jewish student, and the Nazi establishment in Germany gave him an elaborate funeral, attended by Adolf Hitler himself.

And when was Wilhelm Gustloff born?  January 30 1895, so the ship named after him was torpedoed on what would have been his fiftieth birthday.

Nick Carter celebrates his birthday in Vegas

Former Backstreet Boy Nick Carter celebrated his 32nd birthday this weekend at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas. The pop singer was joined by girlfriend Lauren Kitt, father Bob and a group of friends on Saturday night at the hotel’s Vanity Nightclub, where the excited crowd of fans helped him celebrate in the big day. The DJ got the crowd hyped up by playing Nick’s new single before singing Happy Birthday to him.

Nick and his crew dined at 35 Steaks + Martinis, and then settled into the VIP booth at Vanity Nightclub where they drank Belvedere and Red Bull cocktails. The singer’s father snapped pictures throughout the night, making sure to get a photo of Nick with the Vanity birthday cake. Later in the night, Nick got a hold of some glow sticks and threw them out into the crowd of screaming female fans.

Earlier in the day Nick treated his girlfriend to a spa treatment Reliquary Water Sanctuary & Spa.
