In what was a stunning term of events, John Edwards was found not guilty today on only one of the five counts against him and the judge declared a mistrial.
It took nine days of deliberation for the jury, who told the judge that they were hopelessly deadlocked on the remaining charges.
Speaking outside the courthouse, Edwards said: “I do not believe I did anything illegal. I did an awful, awful lot that was wrong. There is no one else responsible for my sins. … I don’t have to go any further than the mirror. It’s me and me alone.”
He also thanked a federal jury today for a “fair and just result,” after he was found not guilty on one count of accepting illegal campaign contributions
Edwards, a two-time presidential candidate, accused of soliciting nearly $1 million from wealthy backers to finance a cover up of his illicit affair and illegitimate child during his 2008 bid for the White House, was found not guilty on Count 3 of the six-part indictment.
That count pertained only to whether Edwards illegally received several hundred thousand dollars in donations from wealthy heiress Rachel “Bunny” Mellon to cover up the affair in 2008.

At one point in time, most of us all have been on the receiving end of the ultimate betrayal, that of the one you love cheating on you.
Unfortunately, it’s something that has always gone on and shows no signs of abating.
James McGibney was in the Marine Corps abroad, serving his country with a good friend, and upon their return, his pal discovered that his wife had been cheating upon him during his entire deployment.
From there, McGibney came up with a brainchild that has named and shamed cheaters worldwide Cheaterville.com.
He says: “I thought to myself, doesn’t everyone have the right to know if someone is cheating on them?”
We spoke to James to find out how cheaterville is making people think twice about doing the dirty behind their partners back.
Celebzter: The basis premise is for ordinary people to expose cheaters, right? Do you think by naming them and shaming then, they might think twice about doing it again?
James: Absolutely! I’ve had people come up to me and say that because of CheaterVille they will think twice before cheating because they don’t want to be put on front street for millions of people to see.
Celebzter: What sort of feedback have you gotten from the public?
James: It’s about 50/50, people who don’t cheat love CheaterVille, people who do cheat hate it.
Celebzter: Ever had someone threaten violence or suing you following exposing them?
James: We get threatened with lawsuits every single day. To date, not one lawsuit has come our way because people quickly realize, we’re not the ones who posted them as a cheater. Could you imagine what would happen if websites were held liable for content posted by end users? Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr would have to shut down immediately, most of the Internet would be in dire straits if that occurred.
Celebzter: What sort of legal process do you go through to vet people and ensure their stories are true?
James: CheaterVille is not judge or jury, there is no vetting process on our end. Having said that, we go through great lengths to ensure personal information isn’t posted. People have tried to post mistresses phone numbers, email addresses, social security numbers, credit card numbers, home and work addresses and very unflattering naked photos. When someone submits a naked photo of an alleged cheater, it most certainly isn’t a glamour shot.
Celebzter: Is cheating more and more prevalent, in your opinion, than it used to be?
James: Cheating has occurred since the beginning of time. It is certainly an epidemic in our country and unfortunately that will never change. The internet has made it even more convenient for people to cheat and CheaterVille is considered one of the most popular websites in the world aimed at combating this issue.
Celebzter: What are the best cheating stories that have been exposed on the sites?
James: We notice massive amounts of traffic coming from Match, eHarmony and Plenty of Fish. There was a gentleman (I use that term loosely) posted on CheaterVille over 100 times! He was creating profiles on every dating site imaginable claiming to be single and “looking for love.” He was actually married, with three kids and was just preying on innocent women. Usher’s custody battle with his ex-wife Tameka Foster is heating up. And now, In Touch has learned the mother of Usher’s two young sons, Usher V, 4, and Naviyd, 3, is threatening to air all of the former couple’s dirty laundry.
In an Atlanta courtroom on May 21, fighting for rights to see his two boys, the 33-year-old singer was visibly shaken when talking about Usher V and Naviyd.
“They give me purpose,” Usher tearfully explained. “I used to be begged to come home. Now I’m begging to come home to be able to spend some time with them.”
But Usher’s tearful pleas are falling on deaf ears. An insider tells In Touch that 44-year-old Tameka is now threatening to name several big stars she insists her ex husband slept with during their tumultuous two-year marriage, which ended in 2009.
But Tameka might want to think twice about her spiteful tactics against Usher, who is now happily dating Def Jam record executive Grace Miguel, 44.
“Though she’s trying to paint Usher as a wild party boy with a huge sexual appetite, it’s backfiring and making her look bad,” says the insider. “Everyone’s testifying that she’s the one displaying erratic behavior.”
