Angels for man’s best friend: Read Charlie’s story of survival

By Karen Stevens

Charlie is a Laspo Aspo Shitz Tus mix. He was pick up as a stray from animal control and placed in the Lancaster Animal Shelter in CA, which is known as a high kill shelter. It appeared Charlie was used for breeding and during breeding, his penis never reduced in size and he ended up losing the blood supply to it causing  gangrene to set in and it had to be amputated. Surprisingly, one of the shelter vets performed the surgery Charlie needed instead of just putting him down. During his surgical procedure Charlie died. He was dead for a total of 5 minutes according to the shelter paper work but brought back to life.

On top of all he went through he had no interested adopters or rescues willing to take him. When Furry Angel Foundation heard his story and was sent his picture they knew they had to take him, they could not let him be put to sleep after all he went through.

Charlie went to one of their foster and was checked by an LA veterinarian whom reported he seems and looks fine and that he’s a very sweet little boy. When Charlie joined foster care in Palm Springs they all thought he was adjusting to his new life style of peeing like a girl for he continued to pick up his leg to void.

In foster Charlie was loved and treated like a KING!! He was super happy, got to go to work with his foster mom and was enjoying life. Most likely for the first time ever. Then one day he meet a family with another little furry angel named Roxie whom Charlie fell in love with. So now Charlie is with that wonderful family who wants to adopt him but he was having trouble peeing.

They took Charlie to a specialist to see what was wrong. Testing was done and he has a urinary track infection and needs his surgery completely redone because the opening that was made so he can pee was way too small, scar tissue may have taken the area over preventing Charlie from being able to empty his bladder – hence the infection. The cost to re-do the surgery was quoted at $4,000; depending how many nights he needs to stay in the hospital it will be more… They have already spent close to $500.00 in medical and antibiotic as well as a culture that will need to be redone to confirm the infection gone before he goes in for surgery.

And we have an update!

Charlie had his surgery and was discharged from the animal hospital. This little man is doing very well taking into consideration all the post operative swelling he has. His vets were able to change the location of where he urinates… the new area is under the tail but away from the his anus.

Charlie needs to see his doctors every three days for the next three weeks. He’s on pain medication as well as an anti inflammatory medication and antibiotic. With all this little boy has been through his sweet little personality helps him find the strength to wiggle his tail but he is clearly uncomfortable at times. Charlie is limited to potty privileges only then has to be kenneled unless it’s lap time. Furry Angel Foundation wants to thank you to all of you that donated to help this little boy, but theyare still looking for donations to cover the costs.  Please help by sending a check here…

I’m so happy to read these stories when they have Happy Endings! I can’t believe the way some people treat these beautiful little creatures.
