He has talent in abundance and a boy-next-door charm that makes him utterly adorable.
But behind that sweet smile, Phillip Phillips is dealing with excruciating pain. The “American Idol” star is battling kidney disease and according to TMZ, his health has declined to the point that doctors in his hometown of Leesburg, Georgia have told him he needs surgery “immediately”.
According to TMZ’s report, Phillip wasn’t eating and looked “terrible” during a recent visit to his hometown, but begged doctors to let him perform in the finale next week. He must undergo the operation following the show’s conclusion.
Apparently, Phillip has been battling this condition for some time. Back in March, he was rushed to a medical facility for emergency treatment of excruciating stomach pains, and he was in the same situation in January as he prepared to take part in season 11 live shows for the Fox network series.
In fact, he was in so much pain that he had to have a stent put in his kidney as a temporary fix until he could have surgery, which requires a six-week recovery period.
The medication he is currently taking also causes dry mouth — which could hinder his voice during the finale.
Given that he has made it to the finale, where he will face-off against Jessica Sanchez, is an accomplishment in itself, but taking into account his health, makes him the embodiment of a true American Idol: One that can overcome all the odds and triumph over adversity.
He gets our vote, will he get yours?
