Music with Matt: Honoring the legend of Ray Manzarek

WHEN THE MUSIC’S OVER

By Matthew Cheadle

mattmusic

Ray Manzarek, co-founder and keyboard player with the ‘Doors’, sadly died on Monday (May 20th) of bile duct cancer at a clinic in Germany, aged 74.

He moved from his hometown of Chicago to Los Angeles in 1962 to study film at UCLA where he famously met Jim Morrison a few years later on Venice Beach, and the two of them decided to put a band together.

Teaming up with guitarist Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore, they began gigging around the clubs of LA, most famously the ‘Whisky a Go Go’ on Sunset Strip, and in 1966 were signed to Elektra Records. The following year they released their debut album “The Doors”, and their first single from it ‘Light My fire” went to number one in the USA, thus beginning a prolific and stormy four years that ended with the death of Morrison and effectively the band too.

The history of the ‘Doors’ is a well documented part of rock n roll history, with singer Morrison making most of the headlines for his taboo-testing, censorship-defying behavior, fuelled often by drink and drugs, reflecting a period in the US fraught with social and political upheaval.

What is less well catalogued, however, is Manzarek’s crucial role in the making of the music, and the steering of the direction that the ‘Doors’ took during that period. Jeff Jampol, who manages the band, says of Manzarek,

“He was the one that took Jim by the hand and took the band by the hand and always kept pushing. Without that guiding force, I don’t know if the Doors would have been.”

Musically, the band’s sound drew on many different genres. Although known as a rock group, Manzarek brought elements of jazz and even classical into their recordings, as shown in his famous intro to ‘Light My fire’.

Playing a Vox Continental electric organ, which he claimed to have chosen because it was “easy to carry”, Manzarek also played bass lines with his left hand on another keyboard when the band performed live, a revolutionary concept in itself at the time, with his playing ranging from haunting plaintiveness to swirling psychedelia, through corridors of baroque-tinged blues.

Drummer, Densmore said in tribute, “There was no keyboard player on the planet more appropriate to support Jim Morrison’s words. Ray, I felt totally in sync with you musically. It was like we were of one mind, holding down the foundation for Robby and Jim to float on top of.”

thedoors1_wide

After the ‘Doors’ finished, Manzarek continued to show his eclecticism by working on such diverse projects as producing Californian punk band ‘X’ and recording a rock adaptation of Carl Orff’s classical masterpiece, “Carmina Burana” with composer Phillip Glass.

In 2002 he joined forces once again with Robby Krieger to revisit the music of the ‘Doors’ with the help of some of LA’s finest musicians, touring at first as ‘The Doors of the 21st Century” and then after some legal wrangling about the name with Densmore, as Manzarek-Krieger. The band still had dates booked this year to sell out crowds around the world.

Not only was Ray Manzarek a hugely innovative and influential musician, but he was also a fine person. One story in particular epitomizes his largesse.

This story was told to me by a friend of mine, Ty Dennis, who was the drummer in the ‘Doors’ at the time.

In 2006, shortly after his son was born, Ty received a call from Ray’s accountant informing him that Mr. Manzarek had not only set up a college fund for his son, but had also deposited a very generous sum of money into it. Ty, naturally, was blown away and will always be grateful to and never forget his dear bandleader and friend.

It is common for musicians that tour together for years to often end up feeling like family, but even so, this extraordinary gesture of generosity and love says as much about the man’s character as forty plus years of great music says about his creativity and vision.

RIP Ray Manzarek.

Randy Jackson’s Secret Passion

randy with mirror, cropped tight

Moat people don’t know that the American Idol judge, Randy Jackson, is passionate about the guitar and has collected them since he first picked one up at the age of 13. So it made sense for the Grammy Award-winning producer to work with HSN to create a series of guitars, the first of which was the highly popular “Diamond Edition” which launched last December. The second collection —  “American Tribute”  –   will go live on HSN, the website, and via HSN Mobile on Saturday, May 25, 2013.

Featuring  both a solid body electric and an acoustic-electric guitar, each offered in five  colors – signature Randy Blue, Racecar Red, Tobacco Road, White Diamond and Stars & Stripes — the limited edition pays homage to American rock n’ roll, featuring:  the iconic stars & stripes and eagle wing artwork; the rich look of turquoise around the rosette and inlayed up the fret board, and also bears the phrase “Let Freedom Ring”,  to highlight just a few signature details.

“In time for Memorial Day weekend I wanted to salute the great people and incredible music of this country with my new American Tribute guitar collection,” says Randy Jackson, “I am very proud of these guitars and look forward to paying tribute to all Americans live on HSN Saturday May 25th.”

Rock on, Randy.

Music with Matt: Rocking Rod is back!

By Matthew Cheadlemattmusic

Since 2002, Rod Stewart has released eight albums of songs by other people. Five ‘Great American Songbooks”, an album of rock classics, an album of soul classics, and a
er..ahem
Christmas album. So it is with much interest that he recently released “Time”, Rod’s first collection of original material in over a decade.

I have to say right from the outset that early Rod Stewart was fantastic: fact.

Faces-1

‘The Faces’ were a great band. Five eternally inebriated cheeky chaps playing with a twinkle in their eye and mischievous grins, but with more feel and soul than most of their contemporaries. The arrogant, youthful swagger and groove of “Stay with me” still makes me want to put on flares and pour myself a large brandy and coke.

His early solo material was every bit as good if not better. With a more subtle acoustic approach sprinkled with mandolins and fiddles, his first few albums bore classics like “Maggie May” and “You Wear It Well”. He somehow managed to blend Sam Cooke with Bob Dylan, all sung with a glorious, honey-soaked bluesy rasp.

Rod-Stewart-Time

Fast forward forty years.

“Time” opens up with the lead off single “She Makes Me Happy”, an upbeat gentle rocker in which Rod sings of blissfully settling into middle age (or is it old age..he’s only two years shy of seventy after all?).

Musically it hints at that classic Rod vibe of the early seventies, with its driving acoustic guitars. A few songs later, “Live the Life” does it better, complete with weaving violin accompaniment and Ronnie Wood style guitar licks.

Lyrically it sets the tone for what seems to be a mostly autobiographical set of songs. “Can’t Stop Me Now” is about a young man trying to make it as a singer, “It’s Over” about divorce, and “Brighton Beach” reminisces about life as a “scruffy, beat up, working class, teenage troubadour” in love in the sixties.

Elsewhere on the album there are hints too at late seventies Rod as rocker-sex-god-parody, with “Finest Woman” doing a vague impersonation of “Hot Legs”, and one or two tender moments with the string-laden ballad “Pure Love”, and the only cover on the album, Tom Waits’ “Picture in a Frame” which brings to mind Stewart’s cover of Waits’ “Tom Traubert’s Blues” from 1993.

main-rod-stewart

It has to be said that Rod is still in fine voice. All those years of singing standards have bought finesse to his customary rasp, and it is that voice that has lead him to sell over 100 million records. It is, however, the songs that ultimately let “Time” down. After a decade of singing songs written by the greatest songwriters of the twentieth century, it was always going to be a tough ask to follow in their footsteps, and unfortunately “Time” falls a little short. At times the lyrics are clumsy:

“I’m working out daily and I’m watching my waistline,

No more burgers and fries,

When I get home there’s a hot bath waiting,

Glass of wine on the side.”

And whilst many of the tracks are pleasant enough, there’s nothing that really stands up and smacks you in the face.

It’s obvious that Rod is in a good place, there is a feel good nature to the album, exemplified by “Beautiful Morning”, and the music feels comfortable and age-appropriate. Perhaps that is the problem, it all feels a little too safe and nice; no risk, no darker moments, nothing truly memorable.

However, with a few of those hints of flavors from his past, it did make me want to go back and revisit some of his former glories and that, in my opinion, can never be a bad thing.

Kris Kross’ Chris Kelly Dead at 34: Combination of cocaine and heroin suspected as cause of death

chris-kelly-kris-kross-e1367461173975

His death at the mere age of 34 sent shock waves through the music community.

Now it is has emerged that Chris Kelly’s death may have been caused in part by cocaine and heroin abuse, authorities say.

Police were called to the Kris Kross rapper’s Atlanta-area home at around 4.30pm on Wednesday. After which he was taken to Atlanta Medical Centre. He was pronounced dead at 5pm.

A police report obtained by TMZ says Kelly had been using a combination of cocaine and heroin, known as a “speedball,” the night before his death.

According to the report, Kelly’s mother, Donna Kelly Pratt, was the one who called 911 and told police about her son’s drug use. She allegedly told investigators that Kelly had an “extensive history of drug use,” and she had taken him home to recover before he passed out.

An autopsy is planned for Thursday morning, but police are already looking at drugs as a cause of death, Fulton County police Cpl. Kay Lester told the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Meanwhile, Kelly’s mother, Donna Kelly Pratte, released a joint statement with Kris Kross’ former record label, So So Def, mourning Kelly’s death.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce that our beloved Chris Kelly has passed away on May 1,” the statement reads. “To millions of fans worldwide, he was the trendsetting, backwards pants-wearing one-half of Kris Kross who loved making music. But to us, he was just Chris – the kind, generous and fun-loving life of the party.”

“Though he was only with us a short time, we feel blessed to have been able to share some incredible moments with him. His legacy will live on through his music, and we will forever love him.”

Kelly and Chris Smith were both 13 when music producer and rapper Jermaine Dupri discovered them in an Atlanta mall. Their song “Jump” was a worldwide smash in 1992.

Just three months ago, the band reunited.

This is one way to brighten up your morning commute!

New York subway riders on the 66th street stop got the surprise of their lives on Thursday when crooner Michael BublĂ© gave an impromptu acapella performance of “Who’s Lovin’ You,”  from his new album ”To Be Loved.”

The 37-year-old looked dapper in a suit and tie as he performed with the group Naturally 7 at the Lincoln Center subway stop.

“Singing in a New York subway is something that has been done for years and years and years, and I feel like it’s the most authentic, organic way to make music,” the singer said. “You see some of the greatest musicians in the world come down here and play.”

Buble’s new album was just released last week.

Music with Matt: 2013 Coachella highlights

mattmusic

Sunday night saw The Red Hot Chili Peppers closing this year’s Coachella Festival.

2 weekends, 6 days, 175 acts, and 180,000 fans later, here are just a few of the highlights from both weekends.

As proceedings drew to a close on the first weekend, a windstorm with gusts of over 75 mph ripped through the usually quiet desert community of Indio in California, blowing dust and sand into the faces of the festival faithful who had made the annual pilgrimage, leading one unhappy punter to dub the heads-down, squint-eyed march to the parking lot as “the hipster trail of tears”.

After much speculation that Phoenix would close their first Saturday night set by collaborating with Daft punk, they threw everyone a curve ball by unexpectedly being joined by non other than R. Kelly, for an extremely unlikely mash up of their song “1901″ and the R&B star’s “Ignition”. Everyone gasped, took photos with their phones, then boogied for all they were worth!

The Dropkick Murphy’s opened an emotionally charged set on the second weekend with “For Boston” whilst a flag with the city’s seal waved behind them. The band thanked the crowd for “showing so much support for the people of Boston,” and went on to dedicate “Your Spirit’s Alive” to everyone supporting the city. They also raised upward of $100,000 to benefit the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings and their families.

The Brits were well represented with Blur, Stone Roses, Franz Ferdinand, and New Order all occupying late night spots.

New Order delighted the audience by playing their former incarnation Joy Division’s classic “Love Will Tear Us Apart” on Saturday night/ Sunday morning. The Stone Roses, who closed Friday night ahead of Blur on the first weekend, switched places with the Britpop legends for the second weekend. Although no official reason was given for the switch, The Roses first weekend crowd was conspicuously small. Apparently, although iconic in Britain, many of the festival-goers had never heard of the band! Blur, of course, drew a huge crowd that enthusiastically “Woo-Hoo-ed” their way through “Song 2″, causing one of the less educated audience members to cry “These guys are gonna be big!” Perhaps they didn’t really know who Blur was either!

Blur hit the stage at the festival

One of the highlights of this year were indie-rockers Yeah Yeah Yeahs and in particular their lead singer Karen O. Dressed in a purple sequined pant suit one weekend and an embroidered canary yellow the next, she swung the mic, then swallowed the mic, bounce up and down on the drum riser, and generally covered the stage like a whirling Dervish. In “Cheated Hearts” she sang, “Sometimes I think that I’m bigger than the sound,” and after Friday nights performance it was clear that yes, sometimes she is!

As is usual with Coachella, the celebs were out in force. Troubled actress, Lindsey Lohan was spotted hanging at the backstage artists village on Friday, just a few weeks away from her 90-day rehab lock down. Rob Pattinson and Kirsten Stewart were seen knocking back the Gatorade (gasp) during the Jurassic 5 set, and amongst the other stars in attendance were Clooney squeeze, Stacy Kiebler, Leo DiCaprio, and German actress Diane Kruger, all enjoying the sounds in the sunshine.

Jack Osbourne in great spirits at event in L.A. despite his parents marital woes

I Can't Believe It's Not Butter! "Breakfast After Dark" Gift Lounge at The 28th Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony produced by On 3 Productions - Day 2

His parents 31-year marriage is hanging by a thread, but Jack Osbourne showed no hint of any family turmoil as he attended the I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter!¼ “Breakfast After Dark” Gift Lounge backstage at The 28th Annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in L.A. over the weekend.

Osbourne was said to be great spirits by onlookers at the event as he hung out with his mother’s co-star on The Talk, Sara Gilbert, who had new fiancé Linda Perry in tow.

The trio traded tips on raising kids and Osbourne was beaming when asked about Pearl, his daughter with model Lisa Stelly, who is turning one on Wednesday. He confessed that even though he is now all grown up with a baby, he still can’t resist playing video games (especially “Call of Duty”) after the baby goes to sleep. While checking out Ultimate Ears custom headphones, Osbourne mentioned that his bundle of joy is currently in a phase where she is referring to everything and everyone as “Bruce,” the name of the family dog. Before leaving, the svelte star tried on some Custom US574 sneakers from New Balance that were designed to honor one of the evening’s inductees, Public Enemy.

LisaVanderpump3 (1)-1

Elsewhere at the event, fresh off a plane from Las Vegas, renowned restaurateur and Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Lisa Vanderpump looked more radiant and lively than ever when she entered the Gift Lounge .

“I’ve been gone for three days
I miss my baby!!” she yelled out loud. When bystanders asked which baby she was referring to, she laughed and said, “Giggy of course!”. Lisa was overheard talking about her love for cooking with the lo-cal spread. ‘I make breakfast for all meals, so I put this on my toast and don’t feel guilty after’. When asked if she cooks for her sweet husband Ken, Lisa smiled and said, “of course! I like to be the only one who does the cooking. Ken’s the man and a man should never go near a women’s kitchen”. The poised entrepreneur was later overheard giving advice to a small group of women in their 20’s. When it comes to success, Lisa’s advice for the younger generation is to “think outside the box but keep your dream realistic”.

Meanwhile, former Destiny’s Child singer Michelle Williams has officially become a fan of LA. The friendly longtime Chicago native chatted with bystanders and was overheard saying that she’s been crashing in former band member Kelly Rowland’s apartment and feels guilty that she “mooches off her digs”.

And Cindy Crawford looked stunning at the event, proving she is an ageless beauty. When asked what she likes to do after dark, she replied, ”I like to cuddle with my kids and hubby.” Later, Crawford was overheard obsessing over New Balance’s Custom US574 sneakers designed in honor of one of the night’s inductees Public Enemy. “I just bought New Balance’s this morning!”, Cindy shouted, “I’m looking forward to wearing them during my morning workouts”.
