Q & A Corner: Julie Feickert, founder (and mother) of Cultures For Health

Latest News / August 1, 2013

Six years ago, Julie Feickert threw out all the processed foods in her cupboard after becoming a first-time mom.

Fast forward to today and her healthy food products are now one of the most popular items in America, with her company, Cultures For Health, a favorite among celebrities.

Here we get the lowdown from Julie herself:

CelebZter: Your product is a hit with celebs in Hollywood and NYC – how did you come up with these healthy eating solutions?

Julie: Six years ago we became first time parents and decided we needed to eat healthier foods. We threw out all the processed foods in our cupboard in favor of real whole foods including cultured and fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, kombucha, and sauerkraut. During that process I realized there wasn’t a really great place to buy quality starter cultures and get great information and recipes. I decided to start a website that would fill that niche.

CelebZter:  What are some of your favorite celebs that use your products?

Julie: It’s been a lot of fun this year talking with various celebrities about getting started making their own foods. We recently had an opportunity to set up Valery Ortiz, Steve Glickman, Tricia Helfer and R.J. Mitte with kits to start making their own kombucha.

CelebZter: We love the yogurt starters! Will you have other flavors or products coming out soon?

Julie: This year we are releasing a line of cheese making kits. Making cheese is so much fun! We just released a Basic Italian Cheese Kit for making mozzarella, ricotta, mascarpone, and ricotta salata. We are getting ready to release a kit to make fresh cheeses like cottage cheese, Fromage Blanc, and cream cheese. By the end of the year we’ll have a full line of six cheese kits available.

CelebZter: What stars would you love to work with in the future to get them into your products?

Julie: I’d love to work with Gweneth Paltrow in the future. She has such a wonderful attitude about food and working with her kids to develop healthy eating patterns.

CelebZter: Since you created it all, what is your favorite product to use/make?

Julie: I love kombucha and water kefir. I find that the ability to make delicious probiotic drinks means that I am encouraged to not only drink more fluids but also get a steady stream of probiotics during the day. Kombucha and water kefir both take just minutes of effort to make and each contain unique strains of probiotics.

CelebZter: Is it hard running a business and being a mom at the same time?

Julie: Yes, it’s a never ending balancing act. I have three kids six and under so right now they need a lot of extra attention which has made the last four years pretty challenging. But I try to focus on my goals each day and try my best to carve out dedicated family time. It’s easier said than done most days though.

CelebZter: Do your kids enjoy the products you sell?

Julie: Yes, my kids are big fans of water kefir, cultured applesauce, and cultured carrot sticks in particular. There are many delicious and easy-to-make cultured foods that kids love and that’s one of the things that I love about our products: there truly is something for everyone.

CelebZter: What constitutes a perfect day for you?

Julie: Every once in a while we get to steal a day away from the office and just spend the day camping with our kids. Waking up to the fresh air and sunshine, spending the day hiking and playing in the water makes for a perfect day.

CelebZter: And where do you hope to be in five years time?

Julie: In five years I hope to see our products in most health food stores across the country. Right now about 300 stores and health care practitioners across the world carry our products. I hope one day that everyone can find our products in their local store. In the meantime we have a full service website and fast shipping.

CelebZter: What is one thing you cannot live without?

Julie: My family. I have been blessed with a wonderful partner and children. They remind me every day to work hard and keep moving forward despite all the challenges.
