After four days without power since Hurricane Sandy hit, things are getting desperate in the lower regions of Manhattan, becoming to resemble more a war zone than the bustling hip neighborhoods they once were.
In this shocking footage, shot by NBC, families, elderly people and young residents are seen climbing into a dumpster in search for food.
The images were filmed on Thursday at a Key Food supermarket at Avenue A and East 4th Street in the East Village.
With many local delis and restaurants closed, plus their own food having turned soured due to having no power, people have been forced to do whatever they need to do to keep their families fed. Many residents from downtown are living in shelters as their own apartments are uninhabitable.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg yesterday said that the city was sending bottled water and ready-to-eat meals into the hardest-hit neighborhoods throughout the weekend.
But for some, the pressure of living through this unimaginable nightmare has become too much, with many people endeavoring to escape the Big Apple.
