It started as a midnight showing of the highly anticipated new Batman film “The Dark Knight Rises” and for many of the theatre goers in Denver suburb of Aurora, when the sound of gunfire started going off, they thought it was part of the movie.
But what they were in the midst of was an unfolding frightening horror story.
A lone gunman, now identified as James Holmes, went on a real-life rampage opening fire in theater nine as Batman appeared on the screen for the first time.
So far, 14 people are believed to be killed, including a baby who was shot in the back at point-blank range during the rampage by the gunman, who was armed with a rifle and two handguns.
Aurora Police Chief Dan Oats also said that 50 have been injured and 39 people have been transported to area hospitals.
Most of the victims were children.
During a press conference, Oats said 10 victims died on the scene and four died at area hospitals.
Police first received reports of the shooting at 12:39 a.m. MST.
Holmes, 24, is in custody. A SWAT team had surrounded his apartment building in North Aurora after he told cops it was packed with explosives, police said.
