Spring Hair: Everything you need to know about the trends for the season

Hair Tails

By Danielle Saliman

When it comes to hair this season, we have some good news and some bad news. The good news is you won’t have to spend hours straightening, perfecting, and  polishing your hair to look neat and pretty, messy tresses are in. The bad news? Getting the “I’m too busy to care” look, does take some work.

Careless tresses.

“Ponytails are still in and hotter than ever,” says celebrity hair stylist, Billy Lowe, “ just not so perfectly placed.” A la Gwyneth Paltrow at this year’s Oscars.

GET THE LOOK: Lowe recommends starting with a texture spray (we love TIGI Bed Head Sugar Shock go to bedhead.com for salons) at the roots to get “last night’s hair” look. Blow-dry with fingers as you tousle hair dry.

Gather hair into a ponytail at occipital area (that’s fancy hair speak for the back of your head, just above the ear line) using a rubber band the same color as your hair.

With a nylon or boar bristle brush (try the Angelo David Medium Paddle Brush) , and muss the ponytail so it’s not so “perfect.” Voila, a care-free (wink wink) do.

2. Sea Side hair.

You don’t need to be 8, or Laura Ingalls, to rock a long braid, thanks to Jennifer Lawrence’s (Katniss) Hunger Games look, the oh so messy fish tail has made a hot comeback. And it’s perfect for those days when you just want your hair out of your face, with  style.

GET THE LOOK: Riawna Capri of the Nine Zero One Salon in West Hollywood (they offer a BRAID BAR at their salon where they will do it for you for $25!) advises: “ If your hair is freshly washed, use a product that will create some grip, such as UNITE Second Day finishing cream (unitehair.com). Next part hair down the middle and pull into a low ponytail, securing it with a rubber band.” While the braid itself is not difficult to do, we had to watch a video to show us just how to get the look right:

Thanks to the Hills’ Lauren Conrad, it’s a simple process!

Dark and Lovely Locks: When it comes to tone and color for your messy hair deeper shades are in right now.  “Even blondes are toning it WAY down,” says Lowe, “and adding LOWE-lights for more dimension and brilliance.

While ombre continues to ride the waves to stardom, not everyone wants this dramatic look, explains Lowe.  Ask your salon professional for subtle highlights or tone down existing highlights to softer beiges for spring.  This helps add shine to hair and prevents over-sunning looks for spring and summer, so your messy hair looks tempting not tangled.
