Cats Style Talk: The best make up & skin care tips for summer

With summer looming (though you might not think it at the moment), I thought it was time to talk to top make up artist and lash extension guru, Courtney Casgraux about the best make up and skin care for us sun-loving girls.

Courtney is a licensed aesthetician, and certified eyelash extension artist who brings a fresh and instinctive approach to creating beautiful faces within the fashion, music and entertainment industries. Known around Los Angeles as the lash guru to the stars, working through appointment or referral only she prides herself on creativity, style, and quality of work.

Cat: I hate wearing foundation in the summer, what would you suggest?

Courtney: Summer is all about fun in the sun. With that said, I can’t stress one important skin care element enough — sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen…Ok, enough of the lecturing. Now for the fun stuff! With summer being all about skin and light coverage cosmetics here are my insider tips for playing safe while keeping that cool, California girl look;

M.D.  Powerful sun protection in SPF 30 by Dr.Gross is a great one! This product’s website claims to that Dr. Gross’ sun block helps with the iron production in the skin — when iron is exposed to sunlight, it becomes unbound and is photo-activated which causes DNA mutations that can lead to skin cancer. It also has vitamin c, which will help lighten and brighten any imperfections that might already exist.

Clarins instant light complexion perfected is a good alternative to foundation illuminating the complexion and promoting a longwearing natural finish. If you need more coverage you can use it under foundation.

Cat: Is there a color for blush that will give a sun kissed look instead of just using the usual bronzer?

Courtney: Yes! Benefit lip and cheek stain in chachatin. This mango-tinted stain beautifully blushes lips & cheeks with a tropical sunset hue. Smooch-proof & smudge-proof, so it’s perfect for those beach bunnies out there.

Cat: I hate using waterproof mascara, as it never comes of when I want it to. Which do you suggest?

Courtney: Lancome’s hypnose drama waterproof in Black is amazing! A single coat with this ultra volume-boosting mascara that’ll take lashes from so-so to show stopping and as there is no need for one coat it is easier to remove.

Cat: There are so many lip products to choose from now from gloss, lipstick, stains and balms. Which do you think look best on the beach?

Courtney: Clinique’s chubby stick moisturizing lip color balmin Watermelon and Whole Lotta Honey will turn your dry, delicate lips into lip smackers.

Here are also some products comparable for the girl on a budget:

SPF: Aveeno ultra-calming daily moisturizer spf15

Foundation: Neutrogena health skin glow sheer SPF 30

Blush: Physicians Formula cashmere wear ultra smoothing formula

Mascara: Rimmel sexy curves waterproof mascara

Lip: Pixi tinted brilliant balm

Cats Style Talk: Lash-tastic!

A few months ago I tried a set of semi permanent lashes from Lashfully at the Angeleno magazine/Ritz Carlton beauty event. I loved the results so much I decided to take the plunge and have a set of permanent lash extensions applied.

I went to Lashfully on 3rd street, Los Angeles, where top make up artist and lash expert Courtney Casgraux. worked her magic on my lashes applying each individual lash extension to my own with special non irritant glue.

The process was painless and very relaxing taking approximately ninety minutes and I opened my eyes to beautiful long, fluttery lashes that made me feel like a camel (in the nicest most positive of ways). As the lashes start to fall out over 3 -4 weeks I was told to come back to the salon for filler lashes to keep the look perfect.

If you are interested in trying extensions I highly recommend Courtney and the Lashfully team as they are AMAZING and the technique used does not affect your natural lashes. If you want to find out more, click here.

Here’s my interview with Courtney…

Cat: How did you become a lash specialist?

Courtney: I became an eyelash extension artist in 2006, after having worked for several years in skin-care and cosmetics. What I like most about being a lash specialist is the transformative quality a lash makeover has on my clients. Lashes add a touch of glamour and instantly define the eyes for a polished look.

Cat: What are the most popular types of lash extensions?

Courtney: There are 3 popular types of lashes that clients request the most: Natural, Cat-eye, and Super Glam. Each type of lash works to create a specific look, ranging from naturally and effortlessly lash-full to over-the-top glamorous – always ready for a night out or special occasion.

Cat: How long do your lashes have to be to add extensions?

Courtney: It doesn’t really matter how long a person’s natural lashes are as long as they are healthy. I can work with just about any length of lash, but I like to make sure my clients’ lashes are always in great shape.

I have over 72 types of lashes that range in length, curl, and thickness. Every client will walk away with a customized look.

Cat: Do people become addicted to lash extensions?

Courtney: All my clients have become addicted…Myself included. Lash extensions will cut your getting ready time down 5-10 minutes, you never have to apply mascara so you won’t have that smudged look under your eyes at the end of the day. Also, waking up in the morning never looked so good!

Cat: Are they safe to use, I heard they can make you lashes fall out?

Courtney: Lash extensions will not make your natural lashes fall out unless you physically pull them out. In fact, it can help them grow since the daily daily wear and tear from curling and applying mascara won’t be necessary as long as your extensions are on.

Cat: Who are your main clients?

Courtney: I have many celebrity clients: actresses, playmates, pop stars, dancers, even newscasters. The great thing about lash extensions is that they make every woman feel like a star – we all need special treatment and to have the confidence that looking great can give us.

Cat: What kind of woman has extensions?

Courtney: Lash extensions are great for all women. Women that want a little extra length or curl, a woman that doesn’t want to take 30 minutes getting ready in the morning, or even for an event or special occasion.

Cat: What are your tips for beautiful natural lashes?

Courtney: My tips for natural healthy lashes are: limit the use of product; instead of applying mascara every day, tint your lashes. Tinting will last 4-6 weeks, use your lash curler only when you need that extra oomph. And I always tell my clients fish oil is a girl’s best friend.
