Noted bariatric doctor, Dr. Carson Liu joins the Jennifer Livingston weight debate

Jennifer Livingston’s brave move to stand up to her bully live on air with a four-minute editorial on CBS affiliate WKBT has sparked a new weighty debate over health and fitness.

Many believe that what Livingston did was right, but she has also attracted some detractors.

Leading bariatric doctor, Dr. Carson Liu, is one of them and he makes his argument on why he takes an exception to Livingston’s claims of bullying.

“Yes. I am a cold heartless surgeon, he tells Celebzter. “That’s what my brother thought when I nagged him since 1995 to lose weight before he dies a slow and painful death. He is 48 years old now and diabetes has taken its toll. After all those pills, they switched him to insulin, which creates hunger, and his weight sky rocketed to 398#. Now his doctors have tried to defibrillated his heart. He is having congestive heart failure with atrial fibrillation and he requires Warfarin (Coumadin) to prevent a stroke. BTW, Warfarin is from Wisconsin and originally used as rat poison.”

“He is always the victim and too busy to take care of his weight,” he adds. ”Stand up and do something….walking and eating healthy things is a good place to start.

“I apologize if I sound like I am bullying the majority of America since 2/3 of the US is overweight. We need to take better care of ourselves as this is the main reason why medical costs are spiraling out of control. We are eating ourselves to a state of illness.”

Meanwhile, the man who propelled this issue into the spotlight, Kenneth Krause, has added insult to injury by challenging Livingston to lose weight.

The personal injury lawyer Kenneth Krause, pictured below, issued an unrepentant defence of his email.

He wrote: “Given this country’s present epidemic of  obesity and the many truly horrible diseases related thereto, and  considering Jennifer Livingston’s fortuitous position in the community, I hope she’ll  finally take advantage of a rare and golden opportunity to  influence the health  and psychological well-being of Coulee region  children by transforming herself  for all of her viewers to see over the  next year – And to that end I would be  absolutely pleased to offer her any advice or support she would be willing to  accept.”

What are your thoughts on Liu’s comments? Controversial, or correct?

Tackling the escalating problem of obesity in America… is surgery the solution?

Americans are getting bigger. Fact. And the latest statistics paint a bleak picture of just how big of a problem obesity has become.

This week the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention released its latest map showing adult obesity rates in individual states. According to the CDC’s annual Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) report, Mississippi is America’s most obese state for the sixth year in a row. The report shows that over one-third of Mississippians, 34.9%, are obese. Louisiana comes closest to Mississippi with 33.4% of its citizens classified as obese, and West Virginia rounds out the top three with a 32.4% obesity rate. And with the disease growing at 0.5% this year, it is equating to 1.54 million new obese Americans in a single year.

With obesity becoming a headline story on a daily basis, the problems associated with it are both physical and emotional.

Obviously, there are no quick fixes,  but leading bariatric surgeon Dr. Carson Liu has pioneered a new type of weight loss surgery he calls the No-Band Surgery, that is similar to the Lap Band.

Liu has become the first to perform a new out-patient laparoscopic surgical weight loss procedure that eliminates the need for a Lap-Band. He came up with the idea of this surgery for people who suffer from crippling acid reflux and he realized the same procedure is perfect to help people with weight issues.

The No-Band is a great alternative for patients who find bariatric surgery too extreme or are afraid to have the lap band. The No-Band is also a good option for those or who aren’t covered by insurance for bariatric surgeries as the cost is $5,000 to $8,000 less than lap band surgery.

His pioneering surgery is only a one hour laparoscopic procedure that involves folding the stomach in half, stitching it together and wrapping around the top of the stomach to control the food intake.  The procedure makes the stomach about half its normal size and therefore, the patient fills up quicker and obviously, feels full quicker.

Some hybrid results of this procedure are blood pressure becomes leveled, Type 2 diabetes can be reversed and as stated before, severe and crippling heartburn (acid reflux) that affects many overweight or obese people can be eradicated.

Dr. Liu believes that patients can lose roughly 50 lbs in 6 months if they maintain healthy eating habits after having the No-Band procedure.

Fighting the Middle Eastern’s obesity problem: Bariatric surgeon Dr. Carson Liu reveals how he is endeavoring to tackle the problem in an exclusive interview

The United Arab Emirates has long been known for its affluent culture, but now, it is tackling a serious health problem that has long been associated with Western cultures.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “obesity is one of today’s most blatantly visible – yet most neglected – public health problems.”

Regionally, in the Middle East, the percentage of obese men and women is 13 percent and 24.5 percent, respectively. Additionally, some 70 percent of UAE residents are classed as overweight or obese and Kuwaiti women are placed 5th in worldwide obesity.

In an effort to stamp out the rampant rise of obesity in the United Arab Emirates, leading American Bariatric surgeon Dr. Carson Liu is set to open his first clinic in Dubai on May 21 because, as he says, “there is a need in this field and in this area.”

Dr. Carson Liu explains that the reason the United Arab Emirates is facing this health issue is because they have access to richer food.

“In affluent societies there is easy access to rich and high calorie foods, there also tends to be a lack of exercise add that to the terrible heat that is prevalent in the Middle East and it  all contributes to a sedentary lifestyle,” he explains

He also says the influence of the West is heavily to blame for the United Arab Emirates current predicament.

“I believe it is influence of the Western diet and lifestyle, ” he says. “Now that westernized fast food is globalized, it is now common that many meals consist of fried high fat foods that aren’t indigenous to what was once a Middle Eastern diet that consisted of a lot of vegetables and legumes.”

Diabetes, he explains has also become an issue.

“Diabetes and obesity go hand-in-hand as we have seen in the United States with children and teenagers,” he says. “Every society is dealing with altered intake of high calorie foods with a sedentary lifestyle

And his reason for opening his clinic is simple: Drastic problems require drastic solutions.

“Surgeries are definitely one of those that can help combat diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and hypertension,” Dr Liu says.   “These are health issues that are easily avoidable if only people would be more aware of what they are putting in their mouths and how much they are eating.”

Is two times the charm for Carnie Wilson? A top surgeon reveals that its not just about getting the surgery… its about putting in the effort

Carnie Wilson recently opened up about having Bariatric surgery for the second time in 13 years. The singer revealed that she wanted to look good for the April show “Wilson Phillips: Hold On”, so she underwent Bariatric surgery. The results were, indeed, astonishing, and here we talk to a leading surgeon in the Bariatric field, Dr. Carson Liu, who explained the procedure to us and gave us an insight into what it entails.

Here is our interview with him…

Celebzter: Can you tell us a little about what Bariatric surgery is?

Dr. Carson Liu: Bariatric surgery is any kind of surgery on the stomach or small intestines that helps with weight loss. We use the procedure to help improve health or reverse problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, joint problems, heartburn or sleep apnea.

CelebzterWho are the primary candidates for such surgery?

Dr. Carson Liu: Usually, people with a Body Mass Index, BMI > 35 kg/m2, with a medical problem for Bariatric surgery such as the gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy.

People who wish to have a lap band need to have a BMI > 30 kg/m2 according to FDA guidelines.

You can calculate the BMI on our website, www.DrCarsonLiu.com and click on the BMI calculator.

Celebzter: Is there a big demand for the surgery?

Dr. Carson Liu: Yes. Randomized studies have shown that Bariatric surgeries will prolong life, increase quality of life, and the latest news is that Bariatric surgery is better at treating diabetes than the pills.

Celebzter: How does one prepare for it?

Dr. Carson Liu: Being educated on a diet plan and exercise program is important to lose the weight, maintain the weight loss, and promote a healthy lifestyle.

Losing some weight (5-10 lbs) before surgery will also reduce the risks of general anesthesia. A psychological and nutritional evaluation is also helpful before surgery.

Celebzter: Carnie Wilson recently had her second Bariatric surgery, why did she need to have it?

Dr. Carson Liu: 10% of people will fail to keep the weight off and a revisional surgery is helpful at continuing the weight loss. The stomach will stretch with time and if the patient has not changed their diet, weight regain is a possibility.  Ultimately, learning how to eat healthy in small portions and some exercise everyday will keep the weight off!

Celebzter: Will she be successful in keeping the pounds off?

Dr. Carson Liu: It all depends if she follows a program. Weight loss is so much more than just the surgery. Patients have to keep in touch with their surgeon and get the lap band adjusted tighter or looser.

Celebzter: How does it actually work to keep you at a healthy weight? Sometimes food is associated with emotions, so having surgery doesn’t negate that?

Dr. Carson Liu: Some people eat all the wrong things for all the wrong reasons.

Celebzter: What is the success rate amongst patients?

Dr. Carson Liu: 90% will keep the weight off at 5 years after surgery. That is a pretty good success rate.

Celebzter: There has been a lot of negative news about the 1-800-Get-Thin offices, what is your opinion on them?

Dr. Carson Liu: I have never worked with them or know of the people at this outfit. My opinion is that patients should seek out a surgeon with a long history of performing weight loss surgeries. Do not go to an outfit if you don’t even know who the surgeons are and they have been there for more than 5 years!  We do more research on shopping for a car.  Don’t go to a referral agency!

And, here are some examples of the results of the surgery, with before and after shots. The difference is quite extraordinary.
