The homeless man, who captured the attention of the nation when he returned a diamond and platinum engagement ring to a woman who accidentally dropped it in his beggar’s cup in February, has finally been reunited with his estranged family.
Billy Ray had not seen his relatives for nearly 16 years, but his act of honesty helped propel his story into the spotlight and enabled his family to track him down.
“I never would’ve thought this,” Billy Ray Harris of Kansas City, Mo., said. ”This was a total shock.”
“I’d been worried sick about my family since the last time I saw them,” Harris told TODAY.com. “I totally lost contact with them back in the 90′s…I was kind of down in the dumps, and on the verge of giving up.”
Since his act of honestly February 8, which saw him on return Sarah Darling’s ring, Billy Ray has seen good fortune smiling on him.
Having previously lived under a bridge, thanks to 8,000 well-wishers who have had donated more than $183,000, Billy Ray now has a home and a part-time job.
“I got an air mattress now, it’s like living like a king compared to where I was,” he said.

A homeless man in Kansas City, Mo., who sleeps beneath a bridge, was begging for spare change Friday when a woman stopped and gave him a donation.
An hour later, Billy Ray Harris realized that it was not a few stray coins that the woman had dropped in his cup, but her diamond and platinum engagement ring.
Sarah Darling, the woman in question, went on to explain how she mistakenly placed the ring in Harris’ cup to KCTV5.
“My rings were bothering me, so I put them in my coin purse,” she said.
Upon realizing the next day that her ring was missing, Darling thought that her pricey bauble was gone forever.
“I was so incredibly upset because, I mean, more than the value of the ring, it had sentimental value,” she said.
She decided to return to the same spot in The Plaza where she had first encountered Harris in the hope, that against the odds, he would still have her ring. Squatting down beside him, she asked if he remembered her.
“I don’t know. I see a lot of faces,” Harris replied.
Harris, who could have pawned the ring for a sizable amount, then pulled the ring from his pocket and presented it to Darling.
“It seemed like a miracle. I thought for sure there was no way I would get it back,” Darling told KCTV5. “I think in our world we often jump to like the worst conclusion, and it just makes you realize that there are good people out there.”
Darling rewarded Harris with all the cash she was carrying in her wallet, but the best gift of all for Harris was knowing that he did the right thing.
“My grandfather was a reverend. He raised me from the time I was 6 months old, and thank the good lord. It’s a blessing, but I do still have some character,” Harris said.

And the jewelry designer, who collaborated with Pitt on the diamond bauble, has confirmed that it is an engagement ring.
“I can confirm that, yes, Robert Procop did indeed design an engagement ring for Angelina Jolie, designed in collaboration with Brad Pitt,” a representative for the jeweler, who collaborated with the actress on her Style of Jolie collection, confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.
“Brad had a specific vision for this ring, which he realized over a yearlong collaboration. He wanted every aspect of it to be perfect, so I was able to locate a diamond of the finest quality and cut it to an exact custom size and shape to suit Angelina’s hand. Brad was always heavily involved, overseeing every aspect of the creative design evolution,” Procop says. “The side diamonds are specially cut to encircle her finger.
