Some of the names you would expect to see on any “Most Beautiful” list such as Scarlett Johansson, Sophia Bush, Candice Swanepoel, Kate Beckinsale and Olivia Wilde.
But what is surprising about TC Candler’s 23rd Annual Independent Critics List of the 100 Most Beautiful Faces 2012, is the notable exceptions and the list of newcomers, who some of us may not recognized by name.
While Rihanna makes the list, Beyoncé doesn’t and there’s no sign of Hollywood beauties such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Halle Berry or even Angelina Jolie.
“For example, as much as you may like her, there is really no need to mention Angelina Jolie (who was on the list from 1999 to 2003),” the curators of the list say.
“Unlike many other annual publications, The Independent Critics List is not a popularity contest. It is not about the sexiest or the most famous. Rather, it aims to be a very international list and one that is inclusive of many cultures, lifestyles, professions and degrees of fame,” they add.
Over 25 countries are represented on the 2012 list.
Do you agree with their choices and who would you have liked to have made the list?
While Hollywood is littered with one distorted plastic surgery face after another, some stars are going against the grain and opting never to go under the knife.
The latest is British-born Kate Beckinsale, who says she would prefer to age the way of her mother, Judy Loe, 65, than ever resort to Botox.
“I much prefer how my mother looks to the people I see here [in Los Angeles] with wind-tunnel face,” Beckinsale tells the UK edition of Glamour magazine.
The stunning actress, who is set to turn 39 at the end of this month, went on to say: “I feel like beauty is a gift that you have for a while, and you enjoy the hell out of it while you have it.
“And if you’re lucky enough to have a daughter and you give it to her, you enjoy the fact she has it. My mother was always very, very beautiful — she still is, in her sixties.”
Beckinsale joins fellow British actresses such as Kate Winslet and Rachel Weisz, who have vowed not to go under the knife.
Winslet has said she is completely against having cosmetic surgery or Botox because she doesn’t want to “freeze the expression” of her face and says it “goes against her morals”.
While Weisz, 41, said her aversions to plastic surgery are simple.
“People who look too perfect don’t look sexy or particularly beautiful,” she has said.

She’s got a body to die for, but as Kate Beckinsale reveals, she works hard to stay in such great shape…. even though she hasn’t always been a fan of going to the gym.
The gorgeous actress graces the July/August cover of Women’s Health (on newsstands June 26) and opens up about kicking Jessica Biel’s butt in her upcoming action film, Total Recall (in theaters August 3), and transforming her body by trading her intense gym workouts for a yoga-based routine.
Here are some exerts from the interview which accompanies the photo shoot.
Kate on her fight scene with Jessica Biel in her upcoming film Total Recall…
“It’s not like a naked, porno, mud-wrestling-in-a-bar sort of fight—it’s a real fight.”
Kate on the differences between fighting a man and a woman…
“I did find that fighting a woman was very different from when I’ve fought men. There was a lot of ‘I didn’t hurt you, did I? Ooh, I’m sorry about that! No, it was my fault!’”
Kate on not knowing how to run when starting to film 2003’s Underworld…
“I could run if a bear were chasing me, but I ran like a girl with my arms like this [flails arms]. The day they asked me to try a few punches, it was dismal. All I could see what despair in the stunt coordinator’s face.”
Kate on switching from intense gym workouts to yoga-based routines…
“I’d gotten particularly sick of being photographed outside a gym doing a squat with a medicine ball.”
Kate on being famous for her ability to kick butt on screen…
“It’s slightly strange being predominantly known for something that’s not necessarily my sensibility, but I’ve never had a plan.”
Kate on recalling her first experience at a gym with her trainer, who had once been Arnold Schwarzengger’s workout partner…
“It was a full-on boys’ gym: ‘How much can you press? Go harder!’ That kind of thing. They use to have a garbage can between the machines so people could throw up into it and then continue working out. That just seems far too gruesome. I didn’t want to be in shape that much.”
Kate on admitting that growing up, she avoided gym class whenever possible…
“I wasn’t particularly athletic. No one ever thought, ‘I must have Kate on my team.’”
Kate on explaining that she never went to the gym when she was younger…
“To me, you only went to the gym if you were really weird and obsessive. No one I knew in London at the time ever did it.”
Kate on the progression of her life and career…
“It all just unfolds and I think, Well, that’s who I am now.”
