After just two days on the job as a Manhattan lingerie distributor, Lauren Odes was fired after a supervisor at the business in the Garment District told her the Orthodox Jewish owners were not happy with her attire.
And they said her busty chest was a distraction.
“When I was first told that I was too hot and that my breasts were too large, I was shocked,” said Odes, 29. “I thought that I was dressed appropriately every day for my job as a production assistant.”
“She was simply fired for being attractive and for not conforming to the religious strictures imposed by top management,” said her lawyer, Gloria Allred.
Odes has filed a federal complaint, but intends to file a lawsuit alleging gender and religious discrimination.
She revealed that she was wearing a dress when the female supervisor first said she was too sexy for the job. Odes wore a gray T-shirt and black leggings with rain boots the next day. But the bosses still complained.
“‘Lauren, try taping down your breasts to make them appear smaller,’” she claims she was told.
Ultimately, Odes said she was given a choice — buy a sweater that comes to her ankles or cover up in a bright red bathrobe the supervisor pulled off the rack. When she donned the robe, her co-workers laughed at her. While out shopping for a more suitable outfit, Odes was fired.
