Last night he was crowned the next “American Idol”, but for Phillip Phillips the victory is a bittersweet one as his health has continued to decline.
So much so, that last night the 21-year-old, who is battling kidney problems, had to sit down during all his interviews because he didn’t have the strength to stand.
This morning he called in to Live! with Kelly and explained that he wouldn’t be able to appear on the show next week because he needs to have surgery.
“I’ve been sick this whole show,” Phillips explained. “I’m trying to get all my work done, to recover.”
He added, “It’s been tough. I’ve had a lot of great people around me, great doctors. That helps out a lot.”
When Ripa asked him about upcoming surgery, he revealed: “Yes, I’ll be having it here soon. I’m getting prepared for all that. I’m ready to feel better, feel like myself.”
He has the sweet, boy-next-door charm with an abundance of talent, and in the end, he won the hearts of people all across America.
Tonight, Phillip Phillips was crowned the next “American Idol”. Both he and Jessica Sanchez, should go far.. if things are done properly. They are perhaps, the most talented Idols to come through the reality TV show in some time.
The rumors that she could be leaving her $20 million gig on “American Idol” first started to surface at the premiere of What to Expect When You’re Expecting earlier this week, when Jennifer Lopez danced around the question of whether she was staying on the hit show.
“It is just like any working mom’s dilemma,” she said. “It’s tough. It’s a balancing act. You put them first and then you have all these other things that you have to do, that you have to give your time to as well, and you have to make sure that they’re OK in the process.”
Those rumors turned into almost a confirmation when she spoke of her future with the series on the Ellen DeGeneres Show.
“I don’t know I enjoy it,” she said when asked if she would return for a third year. ”I really do enjoy it
“This is my second year. I don’t know if I can go for a third year. I miss doing other things. It really does lock you down.”
Then a source from E! chimed in saying: “She’s just too busy.”
The 42-year-old star is about to embark on a high-profile concert tour with Enrique, which kicks off this summer in South America and the US.
According to various reports, she is hoping to lighten her schedule next year, and is even considering a break so she can spend time with her four-year-old twin children Max and Emme, who will be starting school soon.
But while Fox declined to comment, the show’s executive producer Nigel Lythgoe told TMZ he is desperate for her to remain, saying: “We want her back. I want her back.”
Which leads to the inevitable question of, would upping her already mammoth paycheck entice Jennifer to return to the judge’s chair for another year?
And while we are on the subject of “American Idol”, with only three remaining, tonight we will learn the fate of Joshua Ledet, Jessica Sanchez and Phillip Phillips, and which two will advance to the final and a one-way ticket to superstardom next week.
Steven Tyler last night predicted that Jessica Sanchez would take home the “American Idol” title. While Randy Jackson dubbed Phillip’s rendition of “We’ve Got Tonight”, ”the perfect song, at the perfect time and your best performance on this show ever.”
