Travel Review: Putting on the Ritz

By Evan Hosie

While we haven’t visited every Ritz Carlton (our ultimate goal), their luxury property in Laguna, Southern California, has to be one of their premiere hotels, just for the location alone. The 27 year-old hotels is perched on a cliff overlooking Salt Creek Beach, giving most of the hotel a panoramic view of sand and surf.

The first night we tried the flagship restaurant, Raya, with floor to ceiling glass windows. It was hard to concentrate of the food at sunset, with the ocean reflecting the sky dramatic colors.

Featuring Pan-Latin Coastal Cuisine, prepared with sustainable seafood, local produce, natural and organic meat and seasoned to the chef’s Latin leanings, there wasn’t a sour note in any dish, but the Sweet Corn Soup (huitlacoche / avocado / mussels / dungeness crab / maine lobster / masa / popcorn shoot) was a stand-out, as were the Lobster Tacos (flour tortilla / black bean purée / chile de arbol salsa / avocado / cilantro.)

For our “Large Plate” we had the Organic King Salmon ( togarashi smoked bacon yu choy / chayote salad / enoki mushroom / chipotle aioli / achiote ponzu sauce) which was elegantly presented but if anything suffered from too many ingredients.

The next morning we ventured down to the beach (there’s an open-air shuttle if you’re feeling lazy) and stopped at the Beach Butler Concierge stand for our chairs, umbrella, towels, and of course, boogie boards. They will set everything up for you but we’re beach folks so we’re used to carrying our own gear.

If there’ s a golfer with you, the Ritz has preferred golf tee-times at Monarch Beach Golf Links, including shuttle service and golf bag storage.

After a salty swim we took a dip in one of the two pools, which serves food and the all-important cocktail. There’s also two outdoor whirlpools in case you overdid it at the beach volleyball game.

On the well-tended lawn area overlooking the Pacific Ocean, we lounged in Adirondack chairs and watched our second spectacular sunset. When we couldn’t find a bottle opener for our sparkly water, one of the staff sprinted to the restaurant to get us one – typical of the world-class service we’ve found in every Ritz Carlton.

When it came time to leave all the staff wished us “come back soon!” and you felt like they meant it. Next up: another mini-vacation at another Ritz.

Exclusive interview: A butler from the Ritz Carlton reveals all

By Evan Hosie

Travel like a star to the Ritz Carlton in Phulay Bay Thailand ,  where every villa comes with its own butler  to cater to your every whim.  We were curious – what exactly does a hotel butler do?  Here’s our hard-hitting interview with a gentleman who had been a personal service butler for 8 years and now works for the Ritz Carlton.

Celebzter: What is your job description?

Butler: Butlers have the task of assisting the guest and making sure that their stay is the most memorable. They make them feel that they are in the hands of their butler and the butler can take care of any planning, organization or requests that the guests have during their trip to Krabi.

Celebzter: What is the most impressive hotel butler service you have ever seen? What are the details or cover of the services?

Butler: A hotel Butler covers all needs that a guest has from the arrival moment, in which guest is briefed about the property and offered unpacking services, to the departure day in which is escorted to the car or airport and given a fond farewell by the butler. All that they might need during the stay is taken care by the butler: arrangements of restaurants and activities, serving meals in the villa, taking care of their laundry, serving their picnics when they go on day trips, playing with the Children and a long list of wishes that the guest might have.

Celebzter: How will customers and travelers take use of the Hotel butler service? Can they pick a particular hotel butler by themselves?

Butler: Our butlers are very well known and had excellent reputation among  travelling forums; so many guests send their preferences before arrival  for the butler they would like to have.  If they are repeat guests, they always have the same butler as this one already knows they preferences and needs and it maintains an ongoing personal relationship.

Celebzter:  What are the types of customer that the hotel butler usually deal with?

Butler: At Phulay Bay, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, all our guests have a butler. We have all types of guest profiles: from high society families to celebrities or families and couples just coming for a nice retreat or private weekends. Anybody that is looking for exclusivity finds his perfect experience by staying at Phulay and being served by their own butler.

Celebzter: What kind of training do you need to be a butler? Any requirement on gender, age or appearance?

Butler: There are no codes. You need to have the service feeling in your blood and having people skills. The rest comes naturally, with training and with experience. Experience is very important as you learn about talking and serving people.
