Hillary Clinton voices her support for gay marriage

Hillary Clinton is making her voice heard on same-sex marriage.

In a new video, released on Monday, the former secretary of state and potential 2016 presidential candidate (please, let that happen),  stated that “gay rights are human rights.’’

“I believe America is at its best when we champion the freedom and dignity of every human being,’’ she said in a video posted by the Human Rights Campaign, a gay rights advocacy group.

“LGBT Americans are our colleagues, our teachers, our soldiers, our friends, our loved ones. And they are full and equal citizens and deserve the rights of citizenship,” she said. “That includes marriage. That’s why I support marriage for lesbian and gay couples.”

Her support for gay marriage comes after calls to end bans on same-sex marriage by her husband Bill Clinton, President Obama and even some prominent Republicans.

Her announcement comes as the Supreme Court is about to hear two landmark gay rights cases that advocates hope will make same-sex marriage legal in all 50 states.

Obama talks Same-Sex marriage, what makes Michelle “jealous”, and proves his pop culture prowess on The View

Last week he made the groundbreaking announcement that he supported same-sex marriage, and this morning, President Obama was talking about it again on “The View”.

Obama marked his fourth appearance on the ABC show since he has been President, and he spoke about a whole range of topics.

On the subject of same-sex marriage, he said: “Congress is clearly on notice that I think it’s a bad idea. This is going to be a big contrast in the campaign because you’ve got Governor [Mitt] Romney saying we should actually have a constitutional amendment installing the notion that you can’t have same-sex marriages.”

When asked by ABC’s Barbara Walters whether he would fight federal laws that limit the rights of gay and lesbian couples, the president noted, “we don’t think the Defense of Marriage Act is constitutional.”

“This is something that historically had been determined at the state level and part of my believing ultimately that civil unions weren’t sufficient, and I’ve been a longtime supporter of civil unions for same-sex couples, was partly because of the issue of Social Security benefits and other laws,” he said.

And he said social issues such as same-sex marriage will not determine the election come November.

Delving into more personal matters, Obama spoke about the fallout from his impromptu Apollo performance, saying his wife Michelle ”gets jealous when I sing too much.”

“She thinks this is kind of a private thing,” he added.

And, he also showcased an acute knowledge of pop culture when he correctly  guessed that Kim was the Kardashian sister who made headlines this year for her 72-day marriage to pro basketball player Kris Humphries. He explained he knew this, not by watching the reality show, but because he is an avid basketball fan, “he was a ball player,” Obama explained. “I know from watching basketball.”

He did, however, seem a little perplexed when asked about his knowledge of the top-selling sex book ”Fifty Shades of Grey”.

“I’ll ask Michelle when I get home,”he joked .

‘The First Gay President’, that’s what Newsweek is calling Obama

He won admiration and respect among the gay and lesbian community following his decision to back same-sex marriage last week.

Now, Newsweek is taking President Obama’s landmark decision to a whole new level. In what is bound to stir up controversy, but also publicity, the magazine is using the shock factor of labeling the straight, married, father-of-two as ‘The First Gay President’.

The article accompanying the cover was written by news magazine’s regular blogger, Andrew Sullivan, who is an openly gay self-titled conservative political pundit.

“When you step back a little and assess the record of Obama on gay rights, you see, in fact, that this was not an aberration. It was an inevitable culmination of three years of work,” Mr Sullivan said in a statement about the article.

“He had to discover his black identity and then reconcile it with his white family, just as gays discover their homosexual identity and then have to reconcile it with their heterosexual family,” he wrote, describing the similarities between Mr Obama and the gay community.

However, we’re more inclined to believe this cover, what with all of its shock value, was really just a way to bolster sales and garner attention in the wake of last week’s Time Magazine cover, which featured a woman breastfeeding her nearly 4-year-old son.

According to reports, when Tina Brown, who is known for her controversial covers saw Time’s coverage last week, she said “let the games begin!”

What are your thoughts? A brave more or a cheap publicity stunt?

Breaking News: Obama becomes the first president to support same-sex marriage… see the video here

In a definitive sign of the times, President Obama has become the first president in history to throw his support behind same-sex marriage– and rightfully so.

In these times, sexual preference should not be an issue. Happiness in one’s life should always prevail, especially with the European economy crumbling as we write this, and the stresses and strains of life more intensified than ever before.

Three days after Vice President Joe Biden said he is “absolutely comfortable” with two men or two women getting married, Obama told ABC News that “Americans should be treated fairly and equally.”

“I think same-sex couples should be able to get married,” Mr. Obama said in an interview with Robin Roberts broadcast in a special report this afternoon.

More from the interview will be broadcast tonight and tomorrow morning.
