Her engagement at just 19 is surprising, but we’ve been equally fascinated by Miley’s continuing dwindling frame… not in a good way.
Constantly photographed hitting the gym, the actress and singer has swapped her party antics for an exercise obsession.
But with new photos emerging of an even slighter figure, we consulted The Nutrition Twins to get their take as to whether she has gone too far.
Here’s what they say….
Has Miley Cyrus become too thin? Reports say that she has evolved into somewhat of a fitness fanatic as of late and this is no surprise when you see her new slim physique. At 5’5”, the star has lost an estimated 15lbs. Hollywood seems to be hemming and hawing over her new look. As registered dietitians, we love that she is working out and getting fit! We all should do that! The part that concerns us is the rate at which she seems to have lost the weight (it seems like it happened overnight!) and the message this sends to young girls.
If Miley lost this weight over the course of ten weeks, it would have been a safe and healthy weight loss. To lose 15 pounds, she would need to eat approximately 750 fewer calories a day for 10 weeks. There are little adjustments she could make to her eating plan to do this. For example, she could choose non-fat dairy products instead of regular ones and save approximately 80-150 calories per serving. It would also benefit this goal if she swapped out a dessert like a bowl of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream for a fudgesicle or a frozen juice popsicle or for berries drizzles with powdered sugar. This swap alone could save 400-500 calories. Leave butter or oil off bread or veggies and there you can save another 100-300 calories depending if you use 1 or 3 tablespoons.
We were aghast on Monday when we saw the new pictures of Angelina out and about in LA. It wasn’t the enormous engagement ring on her finger that captured our attention. It was the amount of weight she seems to have lost since we last saw her pictured. And, she was skinny back then.
With the weight just seemingly dropping off her, we asked The Nutrition Twins for their expert opinion on how much she currently weighs, but also, how she can get those Tomb Raider curves back in time for her highly anticipated nuptials to Brad Pitt ( that is, if they make it down the aisle, of course)
They write…
Angie’s been making headlines a lot, as always. We for one (well, two!) are always happy when a couple gets engaged. Who doesn’t enjoy a good love story? And although most blushing brides to be aspire to lose weight, we are truly hoping this is not Angie’s goal as she does seem to be as thin as ever. From a nutritionist standpoint, when we see someone as thin as she is, we always are concerned that she’s not getting enough nourishment to sustain her hectic schedule. This can put her at risk for ending up in the hospital with exhaustion and malnourishment.
Although it’s hard to estimate her weight, we’re guessing it may be around 115 pounds. This is far too low for someone of her stature—an estimated 5 foot 8 inches. An ideal weight for a woman 5’8 is 126 pounds to 154 pounds. So even if she could gain ten pounds with weight training and some extra food (lucky her!) she’d be a lot healthier. On top of what she already is eating, she could add an extra Greek yogurt and a banana to her breakfast, a string cheese and an apple and two Hershey’s kisses to her lunch or she could try adding one of our favorite treats for a snack with a yogurt– and voila– in about 10 weeks she could look much healthier and be closer to a healthier 126 pounds.
Yesterday, we showed you an exclusive video shot by Billy Barrera of Ali Lohan looking very super skinny, and we had Michael Lohan comment upon it.
He told us exclusively: “Ali is not dwindling. She is a model and if she wasn’t Ali ” Lohan”, people and the media wouldn’t be making an issue of her body or so-called frame.”
However, we know models are thin, but is it healthy?
Both of our hearts sank when we saw this picture. This doesn’t appear to be the same healthy, bright-eyed Ali Lohan that appeared in her reality show Living Lohan. Aside from the obvious hair-color and facial structure change, Ali is hardly recognizable to us. She looks frail and we are concerned for her. Sure, platform shoes lengthen legs and make all of us appear slimmer, but this appears to be more than that. She looks a bit emaciated. To get this thin, she likely isn’t eating much; perhaps the stress of what is going on with her sister is affecting her appetite, which is sad and understandable.
To return to her previous frame, she probably needs to gain about 15 pounds. To do this healthfully, at a weight gain of about 1-2 pounds a week, it will take Ali about 3-4 months. To do this, she will have to add about 500-1000 calories a day to what she currently is eating (sounds good, doesn’t it?!). She could do this by adding a hardboiled egg, a slice of whole wheat toast and a banana to her breakfast and a yogurt and apple to her lunch on a daily basis. Light exercising during this time will be helpful for her as well as help her to build back some muscle tone.
People magazine’s cover this week questions whether Kate Middleton is pregnant.
They write…
Their friends are having kids. They’re getting ready to start making family-friendly renovations to their home at Kensington Palace. And their first anniversary is fast approaching on April 29.
Yes, say royal insiders, Prince William and Kate have babies on the brain.
From their decision to quietly “shelve” a hoped-for trip to Africa to the Palace’s recent sensitivity to speculation on the subject, veteran royal watchers say the couple is poised to start a family sooner rather than later.
In particular, watching their friends become parents ”does help” boost William and Kate’s decision to follow suit, a family insider tells PEOPLE in this week’s cover story.
Although they are unlikely to announce a pregnancy before the Queen’sDiamond Jubilee celebration this summer, like any couple, “they will let nature and life take its course,” adds a royal source.
The problem, however, as we wrote about before, is Kate and her weight.
The Nutrition Twins spelled this out in no uncertain terms when they penned this piece last month.
They wrote….
Kate looks awfully thin. She has been reported to be 5’10 and to weigh around 120 pounds and this is definitely underweight! Based on these numbers Kate’s Body Mass Index (BMI) is 17.2. A healthy (BMI) is 18.5–24.9.
Being underweight can make it nearly impossible to get pregnant in the first place. When the body senses a threat (starvation) like it does when one is underweight, the first thing it shuts down is the reproductive system in order to preserve and save calories for it’s organs that are mandatory for survival (lungs, brain, heart, etc). Not to mention, one reason that the body shuts down it’s reproductive system is to prevent it from bringing a baby into an environment where the baby would not be able to thrive. Usually when women lose too much weight, their bodies tell them that they’re undernourished as they often have amenorrhea, which is the loss of a period.
We would guess that Kate is amenorrheic based on her height to weight ratio. But this is just a speculation. There are a few exceptions to every rule (think Nicole Richie). But for now, we’re guessing that until this Kate eats a bit more and gains at least about 9 pounds (this would put her BMI at 18.5 which is in the normal BMI range) she would not be able to conceive.
This week Jessica Simpson revealed that she has piled on 40 pounds during her first pregnancy, but she also said she was looking forward to working out and getting back into shape.
But how hard is it going to be? Well, actually, it’s going to be a tough, long battle ahead for the star.
Many pregnant women decide not to worry about what they eat when they’re pregnant. They think of it as their time not to have to care about what they’re eating and really indulge. From a nutrition and fitness perspective, this is not a good idea. This is actually an important time to get nutrients in your body for your growing baby—not just to eat ice cream and fries! Of course, there is nothing wrong with indulging in some of your favorite foods on occasion, but as far as for weight control, it’s just like when you’re not pregnant, it should only be occasionally or very small indulgences daily.
When you’re pregnant you only need 300 more calories a day–easily swallowed in a yogurt and an apple with a level tablespoon of peanut butter. And the truth is, although some people say they are eating for two, the second person you are eating for during much of the pregnancy actually weighs less than 3 pounds! So ideally, don’t eat for 2 people or you’ll gain more weight than is recommended (25-35 pounds). We’d also recommend some form of light exercise (as long as it’s cleared by a physician) to stay in shape and make it easier to take the baby weight off.
Jessica is beautiful, but it appears to us that perhaps she has gained more than the reported 40 pounds. Although we have faith in her that she’ll eat healthfully and exercise to get the extra weight off, she has her work cut out for her! The less she cares about what she eats and the more she gains, the harder it will be to take the weight off! So please Jessica, stick to the wholesome nutrient-rich foods and go for the indulgences in very small portions or only occasionally to make your work easier for you later! We smell a very hefty (no pun intended!) weight loss company spokesperson deal!
There has been much speculation ever since she tied the knot with Prince William as to when Kate Middleton would hear the pitter patter of tiny feet.
But on every occasion when she steps into the spotlight, it’s not just her fashion choices which capture people’s attention, but her increasingly shrinking frame.
Bearing her lithe figure in mind, we sought the expert advice of The Nutrition Twins to see, that perhaps, is Kate too skinny to currently conceive.

While Angelina Jolie’s right leg, err, legs it with its own explosion on twitter, let’s bring the focus momentarily back to her stick-thin frame.
We consulted our favorite girls, The Nutrition Twins to get their take on her bony figure, and not surprisingly, they suggest she eats something now that the award season is over. We couldn’t agree more.
They write….
Let’s face it, Angelina’s face is always sheer perfection, absolutely gorgeous. But we couldn’t help but flinch a little when we spotted her arms on Oscar night. A bit more spindly than the last time we saw her. For a while, it had looked like she was just working out a bit much for the amount that she was eating as she still was sporting very lean, yet impressive shoulder and bicep muscles. But this looks to us like she may have lost muscle, possibly from not eating enough to support even the lean frame and muscles she was carrying before.
If Angie is still exercising (and we hope she is!) we suggest beefing up on her calorie intake to help to preserve some muscle mass. We suggest about 2300 calories a day for a few months. If she weren’t to do this, she would need to prevent muscle wasting– to do this a high percentage of her calories should come from protein. Ideally, if she does boost her calories, she’ll get plenty of protein if she consumes either at least 4 ounces of lean poultry, fish or beef, 1 cup of low-fat dairy like yogurt, 3/4 cup beans or tofu with each meal, and she’ll be able to build back her muscle mass. That is, of course if she is eating some healthy whole grains as part of those meals and some fruits and veggies too–not just eating protein on it’s own, as many celebs do as they try to prepare for the Oscars! Angie, we give you permission to eat immediately before and after the Oscars and we hope you did!
The pictures taken of Macaulay Culkin earlier this week raised concerns for the former child actor- and with good reason.
Looking shockingly thin, he certainly didn’t look the picture of health.
So, we asked The Nutrition Twins to provide their expert opinion on the situation.
They write….
Eeks, it’s much more rare to see a male that appears to have an eating disorder than it is to see a woman with one, but it’s shocking and unsettling regardless. Although we’d liked to believe Kelly Ripa who commented on her show that this could just be a bad picture, as registered dietitians we’re also taught that often it’s necessary to look deeper into the situation. Although we are just looking at a picture, Macaulay certainly doesn’t look healthy in our eyes and similar to many bone-thin individuals, they appear to be far beyond their years as their skinny faces and body frames age them. He appears like he could be in his mid-forties, not like a healthy 31-year-old male. It looks like he could use some nutrition intervention –everything from some protein to help him to keep his muscle tone–to lots of veggies for antioxidants to nourish his skin.
For the second night, Beyonce stepped out in New York City flaunting her fabulous post-baby figure.
And, while there are still some skeptics out there that may not belive she did give birth to Blue Ivy Carter, The Nutrition Twins share their thoughts here….
Wow, Beyonce snapped back into shape fast! We know there are rumors of a surrogate, but this certainly could be chalked up to a healthy, reduced-calorie calorie diet, nursing, exercise and good genetics. She’s got great curves, but they aren’t quite as small as they were before the baby, so we do suspect she actually did go through labor! As for her appearing to be flat stomach, boy is she lucky! We, for one (well, two) certainly are envious of her genetics! She probably eats healthfully making it easier for her to snap back that fast. She could have done this by having a small bowl of oatmeal, berries and a hardboiled egg for breakfast, a salad with grilled chicken at lunch, a Greek yogurt and a piece of fruit for a snack, and a piece of fish with steamed veggies and a little brown rice at dinner . She probably started exercising the moment her doctor gave her clearance. If she’s nursing, that burns an extra 500 calories a day as well, making the weight loss easier.
When we first looked at these photos of South African Victoria Secret model, Candice Swanepoel during a photoshoot in St.Barts earlier this week, we wouldn’t help but notice that what is realistic and what is purported in the media are entirely two different things.
Candice looks like any normal girl, perhaps a little too thin, in the photo above, and hours later in the photo below, she is a goddess.
So, we consulted the Nutrition Twins to get their take on it.
Here’s what they have to say….
Really?! These photos are of the same girl just hours apart? We knew magazines do their share of airbrushing, but sheesh, how is this supposed to make us all feel when most of us find the true-life body of a model to be unattainable? Magazine photos like these only make most of us feel more inadequate by creating unrealistic images of bodies like this. Turning a skinny body into a tan, curvy and boobalicious one doesn’t send a very good message. Such a shame, we say let models be human and keep the airbrushing to a minimum– or better yet, don’t air-brush at all!
