When is a tot too old to be breastfeed? That is the current hotly debated subject after Jamie Lynne Grumet appeared on the cover of Time magazine breastfeeding her almost 4-year-old for a story on “attachment parenting”
And this morning, the 26-year-old mother from Los Angeles appeared on “Today” to defend the move to appear on the cover, and she also revealed that she will not stop breastfeeding her son, Aram, for another year.
“I’m hoping our fourth year is probably going to be our final,” she said on the Today show
The stay-at-home mom also revealed that she also breastfeeds her adopted five-year-old son named Samuel.
Even though she has no plans to stop breastfeeding at present, she does concede that she can see why people have reacted negatively
“I understand some of the breastfeeding advocates are actually upset about this,” she said.
In the interview accompanying the controversial cover, Grumet said she had given up reasoning with strangers who see her son nursing and threaten “to call social services on me or that it’s child molestation.”
“People have to realize this is biologically normal,” she said, adding, “The more people see it, the more it’ll become normal in our culture. That’s what I’m hoping. I want people to see it.”
The image has sparked a divide, with some applauding the move and others condemning it.
Mika Brzezisnki, co-host of MSNBC’s weekday morning program “Morning Joe,” suggested on the air that the cover was needlessly sensational: “I’ll tell you why it bothers me — because it’s a profile of Bill Sears!”
What do you think? Did you find the cover was in poor taste or a good instrument for bringing the issue to a wider audience?
