Re-examining Whitney Houston’s battles with substance abuse in light of Bobby Brown’s ‘Today’ interview

Yesterday, we wrote in detail about Bobby Brown’s first interview since the death of his ex-wife Whitney Houston.

The interview aired this morning on ‘Today’, with Bobby telling Matt Lauer that he wasn’t to blame for the singer’s early demise, and that he didn’t get her hooked on drugs.

When Matt asked him if Whitney was the victim and if he was behind her drug use, Bobby said: ”No, that’s not true. I didn’t get high before I met Whitney. No, I– I — I smoked weed, I drank the beer, but no, I wasn’t the one that got Whitney on drugs at all.”

And he added that Whitney was dabbling in illegal substances “way, way before,” they got together.

We spoke to Richard Taite, President and CEO of Cliffside Malibu, to get his perspective on Bobby’s claims, and why, after several trips to rehab, Whitney still continued to dabble in illegal drugs.

Here’s out interview with him…

Celebzter: Bobby says he wasn’t to blame for Whitney’s drug problems, and he only took drugs once he got together with her. Is this atypical for someone in a relationship to start using if their partner is?

Richard: It is actually common for someone in a relationship to start using if the other person does, and frankly I remember while watching all the interviews of her inner circle immediately after her passing, her family actually inferred the same thing: that she didn’t start using drugs when she got together with Bobby; that she was already dabbling in cocaine prior to meeting him.

Celebzter: And does it escalate both of their habits because they are both doing it?

Richard: Yes, their habits can escalate. Any time you have a connection with someone and you become dependent together, it has the potential to dramatically increase their usage because they are not hiding it from one another, they are using together. If you include the sexual component on top of it, which was most certainly there, that’s going to escalate the usage as well.

Celebzter: There must be very little chance of getting sober if you have a partner who is not?

Richard: If you have a partner who is using and you are trying to stay sober and if you don’t have the tools to stay sober then yes, you are going to ultimately lose that struggle. But if you have two people who end up in treatment together and they are both working to stay sober it can actually be a supportive environment. However, if both get treatment and one person relapses they endanger the other person.

Celebzter: What do you recommend in this situation?

Richard: When both people in a relationship are abusing drugs or alcohol, then both have to seek treatment concurrently, and don’t leave until their treatment complete.

Celebzter: In terms of addiction, Whitney checked in rehab several times, but she never managed to stay clean. Is these circumstances, is it because the person just doesn’t want to beat their addiction or is it a failure on the part of them not taking rehab seriously? Or perhaps the rehab wasn’t intensive enough?

Richard: I don’t know where Whitney sought rehab, so I don’t know whether she got top-notch treatment or not. She checked in several times, but she never stayed until she reached what we call the Maintenance stage, where she would have finally gotten to a point where she could transcend the struggle and it was harder to pick up a drink or a drug than it was not to. That’s the goal with treatment: where it’s harder to get loaded than it is to stay clean; where there is no struggle and the drugs don’t have a hold over you any longer. This is something that can happen easily, but not in 30 days based on what some insurance company says. Sometimes you just have to be willing to do what it takes in order to transcend that old damaging destructive behavior. If you are like her and have been using for 20 to 25 years, then what’s 3 or 4 months in order to get your life back, so you can spend the remainder of your life in the magnificence of who you are and live long enough to enjoy your children.

I believe we are the most intensive treatment facility in the world, but there are times, depending on where a person is at, that in 30 days I can’t take you and move you to the place of transcending the struggle so that you can be your best self. If we can’t do this and somebody else promises you they can, they are lying to you. The reality is that we have 28 and 30 day rehab because initially insurance companies would only pay for 28 to 30 days. But how silly is it that this tradition of 30 day treatment is based upon some blood sucking insurance company who couldn’t care less about your wellbeing instead of what the science dictates. Most people require 90 days of treatment depending on where they are at emotionally, the amount and timeframe of usage, the trauma involved, and so forth. So when people say they put their best foot forward in a treatment center and they say, “I’ve been to rehab, I left after 30 days, I finished my commitment”, well basically what you are saying is “I’m not willing to do what it takes to be successful and get my life back.” Insurance companies are there to make money. They don’t care about you. In most cases 30 days will not produce long-lasting behavioral change. That’s just the simple truth.

Bobby Brown breaks his silence on the ‘Today’ show, saying Whitney Houston was taking drugs “way, way before” they got together

He’s long been blamed for Whitney Houston’s downward descent into drugs and debauchery. But, in his first interview since the death of his ex-wife, Bobby Brown insists that the finger shouldn’t be pointed at him and that he shouldn’t be labeled as the bad influence.

When Matt Lauer asked him if Whitney was the victim and if he was behind her drug use, Bobby said: ”No, that’s not true. I didn’t get high before I met Whitney.” He adds, “No, I– I — I smoked weed, I drank the beer, but no, I wasn’t the one that got Whitney on drugs at all.”

Brown says the singer was taking drugs “way, way before,” they got together. “Yeah … It’s just — it’s just unexplainable — how one could, you know, (say that I) got her addicted to drugs. I’m not the reason she’s gone. … I can honestly say that — I love that woman wit h– with everything that I am. … And I believe she loved me the same way. We wouldn’t have been able to make the most beautiful girl in the world — without love. And that’s the truth.”

During the interview, in which segments will be airing on Wednesday and Thursday on ‘Today’, Bobby also reveals that Whitney seemed incredibly happy in the week leading up to her death.

Describing a dinner he had with her and their daughter, Bobbi Kristina, Bobby said: ”She had this, this glow about her that was just, you know, incredible. You know, and I’m– I’m saying to myself, you know, ‘She must be — she must be doing really well,’ because she looked really well.”

He says she was “joking around with, you know, Bobbi Kris and myself at the table. It was just, you know, she just looked like she was in a good place.”

Matt Lauer also quizzed him on how he felt when he learnt that cocaine was present in the 48-year-old singer’s Beverly Hilton hotel room when she died on February 11.

“I was hurt. I was hurt … because, you know, me being off of narcotics for the last seven years — I felt that she was, you know, I didn’t know she was struggling with it still. But at the same time, you know — listen, it’s a hard fight. It’s a hard fight to, you know, maintain sobriety that way.”

He also opened about how he feels that people continuously paint him in a bad light.

“It makes me feel terrible. But you know, I know differently. I think if anyone ever knew us, if anybody ever spent time around us instead of time lookin’ through the bubble, they would know how we felt about each other. They would know how happy we were together.”

Whitney’s swan song: See her final performance

By all accounts, Whitney Houston was determined to turn her life around. However, not only did she stumble, but she fell during that fateful week leading up to the Grammys.

Prior to that week, it appears she was healthy and clean, but tragically, she suffered a relapse in that final week in LA, the city of supposed dreams.

Here is a preview of her final performance, the big screen remake of the 1976 musical drama “Sparkle” that will be released August 17.

And, just to remember her in the right way, here is an interview where she is just so full of life, and so thrilled about the upcoming role.

Exclusive: Whitney spent more than $1,000 on cocaine in her final days

When it was revealed that cocaine was a contributory factor in Whitney Houston’s death, we were saddened, but not too surprised.

We were first told that she died of a heart attack from drug use, but we chose not to report it until the official toxicology reports were announced.

Now, a source tells us that the singer bought an “ounce” of cocaine every few days leading up to her death.

The source says: “She was getting an ounce every couple of days. A $1000 dollars every couple of days…”

To put this into perspective, and we’re not claiming it was all for her, but more likely for everyone around her: 1 ounce of anything equals  28.3498 grams.

That’s a whole lot of stuff.

Meanwhile, TMZ are reporting that police did recover cocaine from Whitney’s hotel room after her death.

Official documents reveal “white powdery remnants” were found in her suite at the Beverly Hilton hotel and tested positive for the illegal drug.

TMZ further claims that Beverly Hills detectives are not investigating claims cocaine was removed from the room.

They write: “Cops are not focusing on anyone who possibly removed cocaine, because authorities are in possession of the goods”.

Father of the Year: Bobby Brown is arrested on suspicion of DUI

No wonder Bobbi Kristina has turned to Nick Gordon in her time of grief because she certainly can’t rely on her father Bobby Brown.

The singer was arrested in the San Fernando Valley on suspicion of driving under the influence, law enforcement officials have revealed.

The arrest occurred at 12:20 p.m. Monday at near the corner of Victory Boulevard and Wilbur Avenue, according to California Highway Patrol officer Mike Harris. Officers pulled him over for talking on his cellphone but then administered a field sobriety test, Harris said.

RadarOnline is reporting that they put him through FOUR sobriety tests, none of which he passed.

The arrest comes four days after the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office released the results of its autopsy of Brown’s ex-wife, Whitney Houston.

Perhaps he will be the next one checking into rehab.

Breaking News: Whitney had cocaine in her system when she died, was a “chronic” user

Update: Her family release a statement saying they are saddened by the news as it emerges she most likely took cocaine right before she collapsed and died of a heart attack.

The Chief Coroner Craig Harvey stated during a press conference that the results suggested “chronic usage” of cocaine by Whitney, and that she ingested it “not probably too much before she collapsed”.

Traces of marijuana and the prescription anti-anxiety drug Xanax were found along with Flexiril and over-the-counter Benadryl, were also found in her system.

After hearing the news, her family released this statement:”We are saddened to learn of the toxic…..

The official cause of Whitney’s death was accidental drowning, according to the L.A. County Coroner.

However, she was also found to have cocaine in her system at the time of her death and another contributing factor to her passing was heart disease.

When the news first broke that the 48-year-old had died on Feb. 11 at the Beverly Hilton, the night before the Grammy’s, a source told us that she had been dabbling in drugs of the illegal variety.

Prescription pill bottles were found in her room, but the number of pills were “not in alarming amounts.”

The Great Debate: Do you consider Bobbi Kristina and Nick’s relationship to be “incestuous”?

UPDATE 2: They’ve sealed their love in a kiss: New photos of Bobbi Kristina and Nick….

UPDATE: And now she seems to be sporting an engagement ring….dear lordy, this is taking more twists and turns by the hour…

Everyone wants Bobbi Kristina to be happy, especially after the devastating loss of her mother. There’s no one who doesn’t.Period.

But, her relationship with Nick Gordon is raising some eyebrows. In fact, Whitney’s mother, Cissy has slammed the romance, telling TMZ: “What they’re doing is incestuous”.

Cissy has even requested that the Whitney Houston Estate get involved in an attempt to get him evicted from Whitney’s $1.2m Atlanta townhouse, where he is apparently currently living alongside Bobbi Kristina.

And there are fears that he is using her in her most vulnerable of  moments.

What makes this so tricky is that Whitney raised Nick as her own son, taking him in at the age of 12 when his father went to prison.

We’re quite divided on this subject and we need to hear your thoughts because it certainly is an unusual situation, where the line is incredibly blurred.

Nick Gordon confirms he and Bobbi Kristina have “got a little closer”

On Sunday night, we heard Bobbi Kristina speak out about the loss of her mother, Whitney Houston.

And, it appears that she has had a sturdy shoulder to lean on during these difficult times: Nick Gordon, who has lived in Whitney’s home since he was 12-years-old, and who the singer thought of as a son.

But, in the past few weeks Bobbi Kristina and Nick’s relationship seems to have moved on, with rumors that they are now dating.

Nick, himself seems to have added more fuel to the fire about their relationship status, by posting this photo of the pair on twitter, and writing: “Yea we got a little closer and what!!!”

Perhaps, given that they have both loss the most significant woman in their lives, they’ve turned to the only other person they trust: Each other.

What are your thoughts?

Heartbreaking interview: Patricia reveals all about Whitney’s last days

Even though everyone was watching with bated breath for Bobbi Kristina’s first interview, it was Patricia Houston who turned out to provide the most heart wrenching glimpse into the real Whitney Houston, and those final last days with her exclusive interview with Oprah.

Bobbi Kristina’s bravery and maturity was astonishing, considering she’s only 19-years-old. as she made pains to state that her mother is still with her and that she hears Whitney’s voice telling her to “keep moving”.

“I can sing her music but to hear it right now — I can’t” she said. “I can hear her voice talking to me in spirit: ‘Keep moving baby, I got you.’ I can always hear her with me.’”

Even though Patricia said that she felt “the handwriting was on the wall, I would be kidding myself otherwise”, she reinstated what we have already reported: Whitney had turned a corner.

“Things were really changing with her,” Patricia revealed.

On an additional note: We really do think that Bobby Brown needs to step up and be there for his daughter-  calling her every few days is not enough.

Let us know what you thought of Oprah’s interview….

Whitney’s longtime hair stylist reveals the singer was “happy” on her final day

Whitney Houston’s sudden death surprised the world. But perhaps the saddest part of her sudden passing is the common theme that is emerging amongst those who knew her, and they all say the same thing: She had turned a corner, put her drug woes aside and was ready for a successful comeback.

This morning, Tiffanie Dixon,Whitney’s longtime hair stylist, told Ann Curry on the Today show, that in the last few months of her life, the singer had a “comethrough”.

She also said that Whitney’s death on February 11 was especially surprising because she had been in such a good mood all day.

“She was happy that day we were going to go to the party. We talked about looks and what she was going to wear … and what we would do with that evening. She seemed very happy that day,” Tiffanie recalled.

Tiffanie, who worked with Whitney and Bobbi Kristina since 2006, also recounted the chaotic scene that occurred that Saturday afternoon at the Beverly Hilton, and denied reports that she was the one who found the star in the bathtub, insisting that she saw the body ”from afar” .

“At that moment, all I could think about was, ‘Find someone to help,’” she told Ann. “‘Cause I didn’t know what was going on exactly at all.”

She added, “Everything just kind of happened so fast. I was due to report to work, and we were doing a party that evening, and I heard something as I was going in the direction where I needed to go, and I was instructed to call for help, and that’s what I did.”

Tiffanie, who described Whitney as an “amazing person” and “America’s princess”, expressed her concern for Bobbi Kristina.

“I’m sure that everything is going to be different,” she said. “She’s still a baby, she’s still a child and she’s lost her mom. … I can just really pray for her and hope she surrounds herself with positive people.”
