Pop Culture Musings with Yolanda McGee: What’s the Big Interest in Pintrest?

My lunch buddies have been disappearing from the break room lately. I figured they were all reading the latest vampire series on their Kindle’s. Little did I know they were all sitting in front of their computers perusing Pintrest.

Pintrest I asked, what is that? It was explained as a new social media to look at various crafts, fashion, vacation places and much more. They told me they would send me an invitation. I was intrigued now. Why is Pintrest so special that I needed and invitation. You didn’t have to be invited to Facebook or Twitter.

It’s been 3 weeks since I have joined Pintrest. I not sure I would consider it social media as my friends do. The site contains boards made up from photos which are called pins. You can follow boards, repin post and even make a comments on a pin. This is where I am at a loss to the social aspect of the site. Comments aren’t necessarily returned from what I have observed. You can follow your friends and they of could be more social but if you’re looking for banter I wouldn’t hold my breath.

What I do get from Pintrest is it is one place for your varied interest in pictures. If you’re into furniture, travel, recipes, weddings or crafts Pintrest is the place for you. Wanna be fashionista’s this is your domain.  There are so many new designers, trendsetters from all over the world you just have to look for them.

No, Pintrest will never replace Facebook for me, but my friends they check Pintrest several times a day. I check it a couple of times a week and yet I have managed to create 16 boards and have over 100 pins.

Is Pintrest just a fad? It could be but for now even I have some interest in it. I finally have found a DIY project for my handed down buffet.

Happy Pinning!

Pop Culture Musings with Yolanda McGee: Farewell to an icon

WOW, was all I could say when I heard that Don Cornelius was dead!

I don’t want to date myself but my Saturday mornings were spent watching cartoons, Schoolhouse Rock and followed up by Soul Train.

Soul train was created by Don Cornelius and it was known as the “Hippest Trip In America” The first time I saw the Jackson 5, K.C. & The Sunshine Band, Earth Wind & Fire, Prince,  New Edition, Boys to Men and many other great R&B artist was on Soul Train. Soul Train was the launching pad to so many brilliant musical careers and we have Don Cornelius to thank for that.

Watching Soul Train as a young kid it was the first time I realized that African American’s Caucasian’s and Asians all danced to the same music. Soul train was where I learned the latest dances and fashions from elementary age until adulthood. If they were wearing on Soul Train my older sister would be wearing it the next week.

I’m truly saddened to hear such an Icon in the music industry took his own life. One thing that will stay with me is him signing off every week wishing us all LOVE – PEACE – and SOUL

Pop Culture Musings with Yolanda McGee: Khloe Does Dallas

Yolanda is here to give her thoughts on pop culture….and i know we have a Kardashian ban, but we always make an exception with Khloe as we find her to be the nicest of the bunch.

Yolanda writes…

Kim K’s popularity may be falling but Khloe’s star seems to be shining bright in Dallas. Dallas has long-standing reputation of not being welcoming to celebrities. What other city has openly objected to a former president moving to town, but the tide may be turning as the city seems to be falling in love with Khloe.  The Odom’s have been in Dallas for about a month and although initial reactions were skeptical, Khloe and Lamar are making their mark on Dallas.

The Kardashian machine has obviously figured out to win the people over through charity. During their first week here they organized a toy drive benefiting Dallas’s Children’s Medical Center. Thousands lined up to get photos, autographs or just a glimpse of the new local celebrity. Love her or hate her, the local airways are always a buzz with the latest Khloe sightings and tweetings.

This week Khloe embarked on her newest Dallas venture as her radio show “Khloe in the Mix” debuted. It’s a 1 hour spot with light banter with her family, celebrity pals and a good mix of today’s top 40 hits. Judging on the giddiness of the local callers, Dallas is wild about Mrs. Odom and are all about giving her advice of the hot spots around town.  Even if no one wants to keep up with the other Kardashians’ they are definitely keeping up with Khloe. Let’s just hope that Lamar does as well with the Mavericks because I think Dallas has finally found a celeb they want to keep.
