His appearance as man with a baby bump sparked worldwide controversy, and ignited a moral debate about whether a man who was still a woman but appeared to look like a male, should be carrying a child.
The repercussions of being the first known legal man to give birth, have weighed heavily on Thomas Beatie and his family.
Forced into somewhat seclusion and unable to live what many would perceive to be a “normal” life, Thomas’ desire to have children and raise a family has now come at a rather hefty price: He has split from his wife of nine years, Nancy.
Thomas revealed the news about the couple, who went on to have two more children, during a taping for TV show “The Doctors”, where he also said that he had undergone a final female-to-male gender reassignment surgery.
The 38-year-old confessed: “Like all marriages, we have our ups and downs, and we’re going through a rough patch right now. At the moment, we’re separated.”
Beatie began life as a woman and legally switched to a male identity, while preserving his female reproductive organs.
