We don’t ask much from a vacation spot: a beautiful location; spacious room with a balcony; plenty of water / pools; good food; and a cocktail with a umbrella in it.
The Renaissance Esmeralda in Palm Springs (technically “Indian Wells”) just an hour and a half out of L.A. met all of our requirements – and then some.
Located at the base of the Santa Rosa Mountains, the resort is luxurious yet casual. Our daughter loved the sandy beach that disappears into the aqua waters, while we enjoyed the pool bar and hot tubs, followed by dinner on the outside patio of family-friendly Cava.
For Saturday’s dinner we tried the upscale Zagat-rated Sirocco, which features an impressive menu of pastas and lovely touches like the amuse bouche, courtesy of the chef Gregorio Calderin. Only at the kitchen helm for six months, the new chef is a seasoned pro but we definitely found the pasta dishes superior to the meat and poultry offerings. Let your server – and you’ll be lucky if you get our waiter – Brian – recommend an Italian wine.
The desert beauty is also getting a facelift – starting in July all the rooms will be re-done (think new linens, new carpet, wallpaper and handy features like lights with power outlets in the bases.)
Sunday we treated ourselves to a “Therapeutic Sports Massage” which was transformative. After working out all our stress kinks, we took a dip in the whirlpool/Jacuzzi outside in the private garden. Bliss.
As the saying goes, a photo is worth a thousand words and these pictures speak volumes.
