The odds seemed against him as he was wheeled on stage by his wife in the last round of “X Factor” auditions in Greensboro last night.
Weighing in at a hefty 540lbs, Freddie Combs said that he hoped “ the judges will look past my exterior and give a fat boy a chance”.
But as soon as the 40-year-old minister begun singing “The Wind Beneath My Wings” a collective gasp took over the venue, in what became one of the most emotionally charged moments of the evening.
Combs, who nearly died in 2009 when he weighed 920 lbs, received praise from the four judges.
L.A. Reid describing his voice as “heavenly,” with Britney Spears saying he was “shockingly amazing.”
Simon Cowell challenged him to get healthy enough to sing standing up next time instead of in his wheelchair.
L.A. Reid added: “If you stand I will stand right by you, it’s four yeses.”
“Receiving four yes’s is a yes to my future and a yes to my health,”said Freddie.
